84 Test drive & electrical issue help please.
Hey guys,
I test drove a sharp looking 84 944 yesterday, I think it was the sport model because it had on 16" Fuchs... Anyway, this car hadn't been driven for several months and the car needed a jump...After maybe 5-10 minutes of charging she fired right up and ran fine with no smoke... I let her idle as I cleaned the windshield for my test drive... I then pulled out and took off... (Now some back ground info) The pw. passenger side window didn't work, the dome light didn't work (The owner said it had a short) The wipers also didn't work... So about a mile down the road I am up to maybe 50 MPH and it starts to rain and its getting colder so I put on the blower motor... The car died as soon as I turned the knob... I tried turning it back into the off position and restarting ...nothing... I then tried to put her into 2nd & popping the clutch...still nothing... So I pulled her off the road and put on the flashers...(They worked) The owner had run to do some errands so I told his daughter what happened and where the car was... I called back later and they had got it restarted and back... Was the extra load of the blower motor too much for a car with a weak battery? It looks so nice and ran well (When it did run) that I am interested in buying it, if I can get it cheap enough to get the Timing belt service & electrical issues fixed. Any other imput is great! Thanks much!

Sounds like the Alternator/Voltage regulator. Ground connections need to be cleaned.
Wipers not working either the relay or the switch assy. (more likely the relay) Due to the age electrical gremlins will be frequent until finally most everything disassembled, cleaned and/or replaced.

Sounds like a good deal IF the price is right.
The electrical can be fixed with some effort. Mostly cleaing things. Maybe a new battery. Ask when the timing belt was last changed as this is the usual failure when a car has not been run in a while. 30,000 miles or two years is the recommendation for belt changes. Curious; when was the last time you changed your 'S' belts and cam chain tensioner?

SoCal Driver:
Thanks for your post. Yes, I am going to figure in doing a T-Belt/waterpump change into the price of this 84 944. I sold my 951 S a few years back....Seems I was addicted to SPEED/Turbo rush and the police didn't seem to understand my "Needs"

The 84 will keep you a bit slower but not that slow.
Keep us posted.

Yes, thats the whole point...I still love to hug the country roads but the extra gas savings will be nice with the prices now too...
Do you know if the 16" rims were a sign of the "Sport pkg"? I think that got the front & rear anti sway bars & limited slip rear end? It was cold, rainy & muddy, so I didn't get a chance to get under the car & look around... Thanks again!

Check the options listing if it's still behind the carpet in the cargo area.

Be sure to check the charging circuit as IceShark suggests.
