Smile just have to ask...

do we have motors or engines that propel our cars?

Asking if you should replace that timing belt is like asking if you should re-use a condom that may have in hole in it with a hooker.

ENGINE = mechanical heat device

MOTOR = electrical device

We have engines (most of us, anyway. . . )

So I guess BMW needs to change their name since their initials stand for Bavarian Motor Works.....

remember, it's the German word Motoren (Bayerische Motoren Werke) and not Motors. the term is used interchangeably there. it's just coincidental that the words translated into english are still basically the same

Yeah but English translation is the only thing that counts because English is the best language, you should know that .

But seriously, assuming that the word 'Motoren' in German can refer to 'engine' as we know it, is there a seperate word in German other than 'motoren' that more closely means 'Engine'? If there is, then BMW would technically be using a less-than-optimal acronym (unlikely). If there isn't a German word for 'engine', then 'Motoren' would be the right term, and transliterated into English, would be motor. Given the two closely related languages, it would not make sense that the term 'motor' can refer to an electrical device over here and a mechanical heat-producing device over there. you'd think science would demand uniformity on this sort of thing.

To clarify the definition further, here are dictionary.com definitions for the two terms:

mo·tor ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mtr)
n.
Something, such as a machine or an engine, that produces or imparts motion.
A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.
A motor vehicle, especially an automobile: “It was a night of lovers. All along the highway... motors were parked and dim figures were clasped in revery” (Sinclair Lewis).

adj.
Causing or producing motion: motor power.
Driven by or having a motor.
Of or for motors or motor vehicles: motor oil.
Of, relating to, or designating nerves that carry impulses from the nerve centers to the muscles.
Involving or relating to movements of the muscles: motor coordination; a motor reflex.

en·gine ( P ) Pronunciation Key (njn)
n.

A machine that converts energy into mechanical force or motion.
Such a machine distinguished from an electric, spring-driven, or hydraulic motor by its use of a fuel.

A mechanical appliance, instrument, or tool: engines of war.
An agent, instrument, or means of accomplishment.
A locomotive.
A fire engine.
Computer Science. A search engine.

Clear as mud?

I tend to refer to mine as a BOAT ANCHOR more often than as either an engine or a motor. Do you think it can hear me and is paying me back??
