Exclamation Fuel rail Question

I currentley own 2 porsches. A 87 924S (my toy) and a Late 944 (smashed and got it for parts). I dont know if anyone else has noticed this before but on both of my cars on the fuel rails I noticed that the front Damper is craked off the fuel rail (looks like metal fatigue) Has anyone noticed this on any other Porsches??? What would cause this??
Is there really a need for the dampener on the Fuel rail?
Why is there a vacuum line comming from the dampener?

Sorry Im just full of questions, Thanx for the help

The dampener is the one with the pressure hose going to it. Or to put it another way the regulator is the one with the clamp on the return hose.

The box that comprises the fuel rail is real thin tubing. Anything can cause the mountings to crack and the rail to leak. Often this is misaligned balance shaft pulleys or having the belt off a bit.

Always use two wrenches to take the regulator and dampener off/on the rail.

Doesn't the damper soften the pulsing effect of fuel coming from the fuel pump?

Well yes it does, and it also maintains a constant pressure within the rail.
Some early EFI cars (non porsche) suffered rich or lean conditions at certain rpm's..........in these cars it was decided that the injector pulse was at the same frequency as the pressure spike caused by the fuel pump.

It also acts as a pressure reserve, When a fuel injector opens pressure in the fuel rail falls a little, When alot of injectors are opening and closing a million times a minute you start to get high and low pressure spikes. The dampener takes away the spikes and smoothens out the pressure to have one constant fuel rail pressure. IT DOESNT CONTROLE THE ACTUAL PRESSURE IN THE FUEL RAIL... Thats the job for the fuel pressure regulator. I also dont think the Dampener has anything to do with the fuel pump . But I could be wrong
