85 944 automatic transmission not working

I'm new to this forum having just purchased my first Porsche (1985 944) this weekend. I bought it from a friend of a friend and the owner stated the automatic transmission was bad. She was driving it when it suddenly disengaged and she had to coast over to the side of the road. No warning, no noise.

There is no forward or reverse at all.

This weekend, I raised it up and verified/performed the following:

Torque converter spins with engine running
No unusual noises
No forward or reverse engagement even with wheels off the ground.
Differential is OK, verifed by rotating the wheels and watching the other side rotate. Also placed car in Park and the wheels lock in this position.
Drained fluid and replaced screen. No unusual metal filings or chunks in pan. Relaced fluid. Still no engagement
Fluid is pumping to and from radiator.

Anyone experienced this before? Any quick checks or things to try before I yank this out for a teardown?

You did the quick check. Get another from a junk yard. You could have had the one in the 86 I parted out but Todwic got it first.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?
