944 belts

I'm trying to help a friend with his 84 944. Has water in oil and wasn't running. He had head and belt problems before and only about 15k on new belts. Haynes manual says to take to dealer for belt tensioning. Can someone explain the purpose of the balance shafts? I have worked a lot of older US engines but don't understand the purpose of these shafts and the manual we have doesn't describe their purpose. I want to learn as much as I can prior to tearing the engine down. All help will be appreciated.

Check out clarks-garage.com for great and in-depth info about these belts and shafts. Also, water in the oil is your oil cooler....good procedure for the fix at clark's also

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

the balance shafts are meant to maintain harmonic balance... (2 counter weights on either side of the engine)

Without the belt there is a shake around 4K rpm.....

BUT if the counter weights are out of alignment it will shake like a washing machine.....

Welcome.

but if the belts are

we have a few posters who are from your area who may be able to assist you, but if you have worked on cars, you can do this job. do lots of reading beforehand, as i heard somewhere that "chance favors the prepared mind"

good luck!!!

Sounds like you have a couple of concurrent jobs ahead of you.

Belts
Oil Cooler
If the belts have "gone" head needs a fixin.

Check for valve damage by rotating the crank clockwise -battery disconnected, out of gear- and see if you encounter any significant resistance = bent valves = $500 min parts and head labor(you pull the head)

Hey, you could always buy the buddies car cheap and join the board!

Good luck.

Sounds like the more questions I ask the more questions I have. For a guy who just retired it sounds like I have started a new career. The manual I have sucks as anything complicated it refers you to a dealer but goes into great detail on rotating the tires. Tell me more please.

Factory manuals + haynes + Clarks-garage.com = usually you can figure it out with the three of them.

Try Clarks-garage.com , go to the online manual section.

If you have specific questions as you are getting into it just let us know or try the search button here. The search helped me with 90% of my repairs in the beginning.
