Hey guys, here's my problem for this week...
My rack has a small leak in it, and the other day (being the moron that i am), I drove the car without checking the fluid level, and it got way, way, down. Now the power steering whines right when the engine is started, then screams like hell when i turn the wheel. I tried bleeding the lines, and i seem to have gotten all the air out (there's no more foam in the reservoir), yet the sounds continue... can anyone suggest the next course of action? I appreciate it guys, thanks. -- Mark |

Mark,
Try turning wheel hard left then hard right holding at each a few seconds about ten times. Maybe you won't need a new pump. drew1 |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by 944Rookie:Hi Bro, hey to do the rack bleed proceedure only turn the wheel to the stop and then back off dont hold it there any more that necessary as you are putting the pump pressue full on the rack seals and this will over a short period of time cause the seals to fail.
To do the system first fix all leaks then start with fresh Dextron 3 trans fluid, fill it up then start the car turn the wheel slowly to full lock then back to the the other direction to full lock( as full lock is reached you should get a feel of when this will happen dont force the wheel to this position then back off )do the full turning thing (10) ten times, at this point shut the car off then wait for a few mins for the purple beer in the resivour to simmer down, you will see what I mean after the fluid has the air come out of it look and see that the fluid is still purple and does not have any silver tint to it if so then remove the bottom pump line and drain the system and refill it do the bleeding thing again, this will flush out the system, also while the line is off the pump and the engine NOT RUNNING turn the wheel back and forth slowly to help force out any fluid in the rack, put the hose on and refill the system anfd bleed it after the air is out top up as necessary..........it will take about 3/4 of a quart to fill the system, or refill it if you have drained it......Stan |
