I have the opportunity to pick up the left side hatch shock at a good price - part # 944-512-349-00. The guy selling it says that the right is essentially the same as the left (there is just an extra tab), however, I see that there are different part numbers for each side. I am concerned that this would cause problems with my rear defroster. By quickly looking at the hatch, the shocks look similar, however, common sense is why would their be two different parts (especially because the left is more expensive) if both sides were the same. I thought maybe someone with some expertise, and without a obvious financial stake, might be able to advise me. Thanks -

Hi Bro, hey there are different shocks for each side the left side has plastic ends that prevent the body from grounding thru the shock body, the right shock is grounded thru the metal end, so the defroster will work. If you dont have the correct shock on each side you will blow the defroster fuse when you switch it on. The power for the defroster comes thru the left side and is grounded at the right shock attach point to the car body. The right shock also is used for turning on the interior lights so the end that attaches to the car body must be a metal connection so as to provide a ground for the system.....and the right shock also has a finger switch that allows the light to be grounded when you open the hatch...Stan |
