Cool all-time top 5 Porsches (opinions please)

hello,

I was wondering about this, and I'd like to get some input from others here. I have a few people that ask me "what is the best used Porsche to get". Here's what I usually tell them:

1) If you just want to drive around have a lot of fun, and not take out a second mortgage... a NA 924.

2) If you want to go somewhere in style, comfort, and luxury... a 928 (notably a 928S4)

3) If you want something fast, sleek, fun, and affordable: a NA 944.

4) If you want something fast, sleek, fun, and don't care as much about cost of maintenance... a 944S2 or 944 Turbo

5) If you want something that everyone will envy, and you want something that turns everyone's heads... a 968.

Well Obin,
I think its quite obvious you prefer the water cooled cars rather than the aircooled. I am going to take a less cost effecient approach to your question.

Most fun car that doesnt involve a second mortage: 951 (considering what a 996TT costs, this is a very cheap car!)

Something you want to drive around in with style and luxury: 928S4, 928GT

Something fast sleek fun and affordable: 968

Something fast sleek fun and dont really care about cost of maintenance: 968 Turbo S, 951S, 930, 993.

Something that everyone will envy and turn heads: 550 Spyder, 356 Speedster, 911 GT1 (yes there are a few street cars) 996TT, 911GT2.

This list would obviously cost quite a bit more than obin's, but I feel that the n/a 944 does not qualify as a fast car when compared to all the other Porsches. Also, NOTHING will turn heads like a 550.

Now, if i was talking to somebody in my financial category (broke college student) my answers would probably be very similar to Obin's, however this list is for all those rich peope.

Thumbs up

My 5 favorite production Porsche´s are:

This is my dream team !

356 Carrera 2 = Classic,powerful,stylish
914-6 = Great handling with " THE PORSCHE ENGINE "
951 = Fast
928 GTS = Fast, comfortable and luxorious
996 Turbo = Supercar

If I only can have one Porsche, BOXSTER "S" is my answer
But if you want to buy a good used and afordable car, I will go for an 80´S 911 (carrera 84)

1) 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 - to some, the ultimate Porsche. Light, agile, fast, and easy to throw around a corner, as well as beautiful and very VERY desirable.

2) 1987 959 - the ultimate supercar? 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph, as well as all wheel drive? I sure think so

3) 1997 993 Turbo S - the very last of the air cold 911s is also the fastest and quickest.

4) 2001 Boxster S - Some say that the 996 model 911s feel more grand tourer than sports car; they behave more like a new 928 than any 911 that has come before... but NOBODY says that about the fastest Boxster. Many automotive journalists would rather have a Boxster S than a new Turbo... interesting...

5) 1995 968 Club Sport - as a 944 afficianado, it only holds that I should want the ultimate 944.

my 2 cents...

For practical purposes (including looks, usability, economy (including my current budget)) I would go with the 968, 944S2, 951, 944S, 924S.

For fantasy purposes (in random order) the 993turbo (best evolution of body), 959 (love the look), 550 (beauty), 356 (early cab), 962 (road-going model, approx 50 made).

Of course happiness should be found with any Porsche owned. I think I'd be happy with a 968 turbo.

I don't think there has been a Porsche I didn't like. Each one has it's own character and character flaws.

First of all, 928s already have a V8.

Second of all, if you put a V8 into one of the water-cooled Porsches, it ceases to be a Porsche and becomes a mutt...unless of course you are talking about putting a 928 V8 into a 944...

thanks fuco, i had no idea the 928 had an eight.

as for being a mutt, it may interest you to know that mutts generally are stronger & healthier than purebreds.

and if being a mutt means having a superior engine in a superior chassis, i say bring on the dogs!

Here's my 2- Top Five Porsche lists... one for dreaming and one that represents real attainable goals for most of us by including cars that can be purchased for under $30,000 that are in excellent shape and not so rare that they are unattainable. Since the first list is a dream list, i guess it can include Euro cars cause I can always dream of having a Castle in the mountains and driving the autobaun. The under 30k list is going to be only US legal cars.

My Dream List

5. 1995 968 turboS (50/50 weight balance rearwheel drive)
4. 1995 928 GTS (50/50 rearwheel drive)
3. 1996 or 1997 911 turbo (4wheeldrive)
2. 2002 911 turbo (4wheeldrive)
1. 1988 959 and for those of you not familiar with the 959, it was developed to dethrone the Lancia Delta S4 Turbo in Group B racing where Lancia was dominating. Shortly after, or just before the 959 was released, Group B was haulted due to a rash of horrendous accidents in Europe that cause alot of spectator deaths. The accidents were being attributed to the incredible power of the cars and the close proximity of the crowds in the european rallys. So the 959 never got to prove itself in what it was designed for... rally racing. (if you've seen rally racing lately, they are getting back to those levels that were outlawed) The street version was amazing..four wheel drive twin turbo 2.8L dohc 24v flat 6 making 450 HP @ 6500 and 370 ft-lb @ 5500, good for 0-60 of 3.6sec, 1/4 in 11.9 @ 119.5 mph, topping out at 198 mph..... all back in the mid 80's.

Under $30k

5. 944 TurboS
4. 911 Cabrio
3. 928 S4 5sp
2. 1995 968 Cabrio
1. early 90's 911 Carrera4

The third one my uncle almost bought for 65,000 but instaed got an audi TT.....I was dissapointed but hes gettin old...still no excuse....and lemme say one thing those TT's are garbage it barely gives my 944 a run for the money....he took me for a little back road touring in oyster bay and it pulled as hard as my NA and after i put my konis in the rear will handle just as well....the audi was say a BIG dissappointment.
