torsion bars

I have heard from most that this is not a job for the weak of heart. I was wondering what the cost usually is to have a shop put them in. I bought 220 LB stock height springs for the front of my car for auto-x but I am pretty sure it dropped the nose a little bit. Can someone quote me a price for installation of new torsion bars? Thanks.

Replacing, and/or re-indexing the torsion bars is one of the harder jobs on the 944...physically and mentally.

Physically... you have to remove the ENTIRE rear suspension and running gear. (two or three times if you don't get the mental part right.)

Mentally...you have to calculate and calibrate changes in torsion bar spring rates, ride height, un-sprung position, and weighted positions.

But, you already knew that.

We installed new 30mm torsion bars two winters ago. Took us 4-6 hours to remove all the suspension. Another 2-4 hours inspecting, marking and re-thinking the proceedure. Installation was another 4-6 hours. We did it over two weekends.

Shops will probably want a minimum of 12-14 hours for labor...maybe more.

Good Luck
JM

What did you think of 30mm's? Were they too stiff or pretty good for auto crossing? I just got 28mm's. I have not put them in yet, but hoping to soon now that there is not snow everywhere. I was reading that in the later models you did not have to pull the whole rear end out, there were cover plates that could be accessed. Course I have not done it yet so I am not sure.

I was thinking about getting 27 mm or maybe 28 mm for autocross. I think that would be a good size without being too stiff.

We run in the 944Cup, so our car is race only. It's a fairly stiff and pretty low. On smooth pavement you wouldn't notice it on the street, but if you hit some patches and pot-holes...it'll rattle your teeth.

Front:
400 lb springs, (HyperCoils, drops the front about 1")
27 mm sway bar (used from stock 944Turbo)

Back:
30 mm Torsion bars
19 mm sway bar (new MO30 factory Porsche)

For Autox some people use:
Front: 250 lb springs, and 27 mm sway bar
Back: 27 mm Torsion, and 19 mm sway bar

Good Luck
JM
