Not to beat a dead horse but re: axel r/r
I took the offending corner's wheel off to check bearing play and if there was any slop in the hub-to-cv-to trans. I could not see any visable slop but my arms versus torque thru the trans is quite different. I could feel slop (andsee) but it went into the trans. I know it's not supposed to be tight but the slop was not excessive. Before removing the wheel I shook the tire and there is a little movement at the bearings but again, not too much.
The boots are sealed tight and nothing leaks but I still heard the clicking that day when I cut a right turn sharp! (btw, I suspect the leftrear.) I need a way to really check without disassembly if possible. I also was hoping to find that page from the workshop manual on how to r/r the whole axel. I saw the allen head bolts but... what's beyond that? TIA |
You could remove the axle and check the joints, probably wouldn't hurt to clean and repack them anyway. Once the "allen" (which are actually 12-point) bolts are removed the axle comes right out.....

The axle is very easy to remove just unbolt it. Then to R&R the axle is a little different, I havent done one on a porsche but most of them arent that hard. Just get the boot off, then there is usually some type of clip that holds the CV joint on, remove that and slide the cv joint off then inspect. Most of the time its cheaper and less time consumming if you just go and but a Reman CV shaft and If I where you I would replace both of them, Because if one is going then the other one isnt that far behind.

One thing you might want to check on your 83, is the center caps for the cookies. I thought for the longest time my left rear CV was shot. It did make that classic click, click, click sound. After some altercations to the center cap, the fitting became snug, and no more noise. Count me as a lucky one, I hope you are the same.SmileWavy

OMG I would be the luckiest hombre if the center cap was loose. I'll check that tomorrow! In the meantime I would be putting on a complete new axel with cv's on it. I'll probably get from Pelican for 236 bucks.
Sooo, instead of allen head I'll need a torx? Good, an excuse for more tools. Pop out the torx bolts and the axel will come right out? Don't have to pull the caliper, either. |
