Porsche Crest 931 role call

As i´ve gathered there´s one or two of us out there, and most of us seem to start having trouble locating pts these days-at least i do over here in gothenburg Sweden.
So...
I guess what i´m asking is that we could state what car and in what state to sorta sum up.Guess ya´ll know what i mean.

Mine is a 79 that´s fairly hot rodded(yeah well....).
Sports a gastly lookin body kit-yellow to the colour.
Weltmeister bushings throughout the chassis.Bilsteins all around.
Engine has been apart about a zillion times by now ,as i keep blowing pistons to crap....
Anyways.
Have had the engine reworked by myself more times then i care to remember, and apart from the obvious it´s been bored out to 87mm flat.Crank reground aso.Con rods aso-basically the works-has been completely restored.
We welded up a "race" intercooler for it and have added a simple MD 5(english by origin) sorta piggyback( can i call it that havin the CIS in mind?) that controls 2 *480cc(036) Bosch injectors that come into play above 0,7 bar boost.
Turbo is a KKK hybrid with a 160mm housing on a 78mm impeller and a 50mm inlet compressor from the K27 series on a stock exhaust manifold.Overhauled that POS too the last time i had the engine out.3" exhaust aso.Boost is limited(runs for cover.. )to 25psi.Nope...that´s NOT a misprint. This thing HAULS ASS MAJOR LEAGUE!
Run stock style 1 turbo cup wheels.

Mods/overhauls i´m seriously considering is;
1/Installing a SMT6 programmable ign coupled with a MSD 6AL(already got the MSD unit laying around as a left over anyways)
2/Dialing that in with the current WB O2 already in car
3/Taking the gear box apart and replace the syncros for 1,st and 2;nd gear IF THE A-HOLES at Porsche gothenburg will ever let me take delivery of pts needed!Ordered these together with a set of pistons rings early nov last year.So far to no avail.
Btw...is there one single 931 with syncros on first and second that works around???

Oh yeah...
There´s most def a 4;th point on the agenda.
4/Replace cracked windshield.
Engines torq made the chassis twist enough to make it meet its maker...
5/Make up some sort of reinforcement to the front chassis structure.
One fun little car this btw!

I have a 1981 931. I'm on the tail end of a top end recondition (new valves, guides, and seals).

Modifications:

- 951 intercooler installed in the nose but pipes have not been run yet
- European Series 1 turbocharger (K26-2470R6.10)
- Lindsey Racing manual boost controller
- Factory 5-bolt brakes (standard on 1981+) with ATE slotted rotors, metal master pads in front. Standard rotors and metal master pads in rear. DOT Stainless brake lines all around.
- 250 lb/in Weltmeister lowering springs in front, upgraded but unspecified torsion bars in rear installed by previous owner.
- Bilstein shocks/struts
- 28mm Weltmeister front swaybar with adjustable drop-links, 18mm 951 rear swaybar
- 944-spec Flat-Dish wheels, 16x7 and 16x8 w/ 52.3mm offset. 205/225 tire combo.
- Late 944 power sport seats (seat fronts being recovered in black velour)
- 944 spoiler
- European/ROW bumpers front and rear
- Keyless entry system w/ window rollup

A perpetual project for me. Progress is going good recently, though!

I'll stick my neck in here too. I'm waiting for piston set #2 to arrive from JE right now. My list is something like this on a 1980 931 "S":

8.5:1 Forged pistons
bored/crank turned
head reconditioned
fresh turbo
gutted cat
Boost Sciences Reliaboost II controller
An intercooler will be a future project...

Rebuilt gearbox (although I couldn't source a replacement for the worn 1st gear teeth, all new syncros though).

New shiny paint.
Early 944 interior/heater.
Late 944 power leather seats.
16x6&8" Design 90's with 205/225
and another set of 16x6" D-90's with 205's.

19mm adjustable rear swaybar
23mm front bar
Currently on stock springs, but I've got a set of 200# fronts and 25.5mm torsions that I think I'm going to throw in. I need a new set of front Koni's and a rebuild on the rears.

Other than the mods, just about everything is new. Hopefully I'll finish up the motor so I can actually DRIVE it! Check out my www for some pics-

PS- 25psi ?!! Wow!

Cool.
Frankly, one of the most desireable things to mod IMO is the ignition curve for a non stocker.(upped boost or whatever)
The stock solution of the diaphragm within the vaccum canister on the distributor and its dual hose conns simply doesn´t cut it when you start up´in the boost for real.

Another thing is that fuel can always be added...the coarse way.
Of course there´s power to be had by triming the fuel curve more precisely, but from a cost perspective-and having in mind that most of these are streetcars after all-it´s hardly cost effective.
I for one build engines for a living and as a result i´ve been around an aftermarket supplier or two of EFI components.
The SMT6 has struck me as a cheap and effective way to alter especially mid range and light load timing.

Likewise, when you start passing boost levels much above 1 bar(14psig) the stock ignition box on the drivers side front fender simply doesn´t cut it anymore. Ergo, out it comes and-again-the simple and cost effective way to remedy the problem in my case has been a MSD 6 AL(had a used one laying around the shop complete with dial in rev limiter).Simple as hell to install, and takes care of the problem once and for all.

For the stockers out there...
The stock ign box has a reputation of failure.
More often then not by moisture entering the box(OEM sealing is a joke),and letting pts be drained over time. Likewise,if you drill out the rivets of the box (just tap them for M4 machine screws when puttin it back together) you often encounter the leads for the ceramic resistor within the box burned off, rendering the car a "no start" or severe misfire.
10 min with a soldering iron takes care of it all.Just touch every soldering point in sight with the iron.

Frankly speaking the ign system of these cars is marginal at best. The stock Bosch system-with its recomended plug gap of 0,6mm-is a damn joke. On the MSD system i run 1mm with no ill effects.Car starts cleaner, the misses above 1 bar are gone aso aso.

On a strange sidenote...
My car suddenly developed a strange miss.
Ran around like crazed one legged chicken to nail the problem down.It wasn´t until we drilled a hole in the cap to check rotor timing we discovered the problem!(Not that the hole hurts anything anyway..on the contrary).
Turned out that the trigger star wheel in the dist had come lose!!!

As for the add on fueling i´ll take some pics asap and post. In those you will also clearly see the dump valve on the pipe running for the throttle housing.Coarse but effective.

Nick btw...
Don´t fret on the 7,5 comp ratio.Boost takes care of that.In fact over here those that DO run these cars off road ALL run the 7,5 ratio. As far as lost mid range...yeah well..
The stock comp ratio for 79 was 7,5,and i for one am stickin with it as for now at least.
Took a look at your home page, and those slugs on the last page show some serious signs of scuffing alright.
No only that, but some of them have NOT run straight in their bores.Likewise the wear pattern on the rod bearings show-again-that something´s not straight(or more to the point in that case not concentric)
My advice to you is to pick up some simple snap gauges and check the roundness and ovality of the main end holes of the rods YOURSELF.Seing is believing.Likewise check the rods for straightness.(If you want explained how to-let me know)

All of you speak of converting 4 lug to 5?
Was that a US only thingy with those 4 lug 924 setup brakes?
´Cause my 79(and others previously owned)have all had the lug pattern OEM.In fact over here the stock front rotors are the same as the early 911s.

Btw..
When i welded up the new exhaust system i opted to let the pipe from the wastegate dump into free air
Makes for a neat sound everytime you reach boost limit
(Yeah..i know i´m childish..*LOL*)

As for wheels, the ones i´m running are the series 1 17" turbo cup wheels. 9,5" wide out back and 7,5" wide out front. We turned some 13mm spacers for the rears and 6 for the front on the lathe. It IS a close call however, and frankly i had to roll the rear lips to make ém fit. Then again i run some fairly massive neg camber curves. Will take some pics of that too.

Jesper

Seems i´ve got the scoop on the piston rings issue!!
After endless hours reading through the ABR master catalogue of engine pts,it seems like ring for the Fiat Tempra(euro version) should fit.
Same 1,5/1,75/3mm spacing.
Even the top ring seems chrome.

Like stated i took some pics of the 931.
Dunno where to host them tho?
