Help with steering rattles in column

83 N/A with manual steering. Car is running good and now I'm down to the I'll get around tuit's :-)

I am getting a pretty jarring rattle through the steering column and I see the bearing where it goes through the firewall, looks pretty nasty, so I plan to clean and repack this. I know all the front end components are perfect with less than 4k on them. (And yes SoCal, I did retension the belts).

Anyone have an exploded pic of the columm internals? I'm assuming there must be more bearings that need attention.

Thanks!

I need this too. I have the same trouble to the point that my horn does not "contact" unless I lift up on the steering wheel a little. I think there is one bearing inside the upper column and one at the fire wall.

Check for a crack in the firewall as well. I have seen these in a few earlies.

I'll keep you posted, I'm going to tackle this anyway. It's raining buckets and I've got the day off. This is the last one of the "This pisses me off" things I want to get fixed.

Ha! problem solved. The bearing behind the TS and wiper switches was completely dry, literally the balls were rattling over sharp irregularities. I packed it by hand and the noises are gone. Mine didn't have excessive play, just the rattles.

I think that bearing is gone in mine....you suck........J/K
