Grassroots $2004 Challenge 944!!

Here are some quick pics of the Grassrootsmotorsports $2004 challenge. It was in Gainesville, florida this past weekend...lots of fun and great creativity.

How a 944 you say? They got two of them. One parts of a 944s with no engine for $200 another barely running 944na with a great body from auction.

They put the na engine in the S for personal use and used the na body for this event.

350 donated from a buddies work truck.

Will tell you more about it soonSmileWavy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1081178755.jpg [img]

The guys that did this are from Colorado (Dave and Dave). evilallianceracing.com.

They have no aspirations of running this car on the street. It is for track purposes only.

i'm so torn

do we even call that a 944 anymore?

944 or not, I think its prettyy cool.

You see that little badge in between the headlights?

Take that off.

Im making a car right now, and just not to take the chevy route..im willing to pay 3X times the money.

Give me a break. This was a 944 destined for the scrap yard, and a couple of guys spent a total (or less) than $2004, to get it back on the road, with a V8. I think it's pretty cool. It looks like a nice clean install. If the owners offered me the car for $2004, I'd probably buy it just to check it out...

Props to Evil Aliance racing for their efforts! Nice to see a 944 entered in such a creative and definately 'grassroots' event!

I've been following the GRM $200X challenge since they began it with the $1500.00 challenge (IIRC). Based on the scoring, the only way a 944 would even be in the running is if it could get a decent 1/4 mile time. A tricked out 951 engine would do it, but most likely, that would blow the budget. A Chevy 350 is a natural choice: hot rodder have been using them for years!

Granted, it's not 100% Porsche, but it certainly can show how cheap power can be attained for the 944.

Props to Dave and Dave! I can't wait to read about it in Grassroots Motorsports....

I am not torn here at all.

They had no intentions of ever putting this car on the street. It would take many thousands to do that and to make it remotely comfortable. But for the track.....Great....best lookin car out there.
They also did a very quality job on the body and paint work.

Now, as far as being able to truly compete in the event....Nope.

How are you going to beat a CRX with a 350 and corvette wheels all around?

BTW- The daves tell me that this car will be untag-able when the current plates expire in colorado. Stays in the garage or gets sold.

I don't understand all this commontion over a V8 in a 944 na. Its not like the 944 is a rare, exotic vehicle. A n/a 2.5 liter 944 is an inexpensive car which was mass-produced. If someone installs a SBC, I think that's pretty cool, and a great way turn your previously slow car into something bloody fast. Now, if someone were to install the chevy engine in say, a 993TT, then that would be stupid. But its just a slow little 944, so I really don't understand all the fuss.

The owners name is Dave. He lives about three blocks from me. The car came from a salvage auction here in colorado and he brought it back from the grave. I got to see several stages of it being built. The entire car, trim rubber, rear spoiler, was painted primer grey when he got it. I supplied some trim pieces to help him get ir cleaned up a bit. I had not seen him to ask him the status of the race, so thanks for the update.
