short shift kits for 944?

Hello again...

does anyone know who makes short shift kits for 944s? Reason I ask is my car has one on it and the big spherical joint is all binding. The bolt that holds the whole mess together worked out on me, to the point where I couldn't reliably find 1st or 2nd gear at a stop light. Well I took it apart today and found that the whole mess was actually using the bolt as a pivot, not the spherical joint as it was supposed to. when I put it all back together (with a new bolt) I could barely shift gears. So I took it out again and worked some valve lapping compound into the joint and worked it back and forth for a while until the effort came down to a manageable level but I'm still not happy with it... it's hard as hell to shift due to the binding of the linkage. I'd like to see if I can get a replacement from the mfgr. since the PO of my car just put it on not that long ago (I would put the stock parts on but he lost them...)

thanks,

nate

You sure you are talking about a short shift kit? Looking at mine, and the pictures at 944racing, it doesn't appear that you can replace the spherical ball with a bolt. http://www.944racing.com/Tech/944RSSK/Images/07150019.jpg

It sounds more like you are having troubles with the shift lever itself. They wear out, and instead of replacing the whole lever, you can grind out the pin and replace the pin with a bolt.

That 944online link sells the shift lever for $48, try pelican too, don't know how much Pelican has it for.

hey blue, you've got the tranny mounted short shift?

how do you like it?

my next upgrade is going to be to my linkage, and i'm not sure what the right way to go will be, i like the koleken (sp?) shift lever, because it seems like a better design then the factorys... also having something on both sides of the linkage means more positive shifting... regardless, i'll nEED to replace the factory stuff thats on the trans. simply because it's old and worn. off power my shift linkage makes a horrible racket.. (vibrating)

also, has anyone ever pulled out of first gear and into second only to let the clutch out and still be in first gear? looks like i'm gonna have to rebuild the trans now too :/

I have a used autothority (tranny mounted) short shift kit if someone wants it. Everything is in great shape and complete with the original mounting instructions. Used very little on a race car. $100.00 gdjones6@hotmail.com

thanks for the replies guys...

to BlueQuest - that's exactly what I have, the spherical joint on part A is binding and it was pivoting on the bolt connecting it to part B. I wonder if the PO used a bolt that was too long and barfed up the ball. Where did you get that kit? That looks exactly like mine, although mine's rusty and greasy from living under the car.

to gdjones, is this what you have? if so I'm interested. njnagel at toad dot net is my email.

thanks

nate

Well I talked to the PO of the car and the kit was bought from Autothority. This is good because they're like 5 minutes from my girlfriend's place... I'll have to have a little chat with them and see if they can hook me up.

I own the Autothority kit, but I don't have it installed yet, it's a part of the whole make-over process in my sig, that was started with an incident from a deer.

I struggled long and hard on which way I wanted to go for a short shift, I bought the Autothority based on members here and Rennlist. I thought of buying the Kokeln unit, but I couldn't see how it could make a vast improvement in shifts, without causing bindage in the shift rod.

The Autothority unit, for roughly the same price as the Kokeln, at least has 2 settings. So if setting 1 isn't short enough, you can go to the second setting.
