Race tire/wheel question

Has anyone run 15 inch wheels with 225/50/15 on them? I am pretty sure this isn't a stock size and I am thinking for auto-x because it might help/change my gearing. I am hoping to buy a set of phonedials at the swap meet coming up and I was thinking that using the smaller wheel and tire combo might give me a little bit of an advantage as well as eliminate some unsprung weight. I will be running Kumho Victoracer V700's and I was just wondering if anyone has tried this. I currently have 16x7 and 16x8's phonedials on the front and rear (respectively) and I am running 225/50/16 on the front and 245/45/16 on the rear. Any advice?

I've been running 225/50-15 for a long time on my phonies - for autox
Dunno if dropping size is going to help you...

'44Cup Race car:

225/ 50/ R15 - Kuhmo Victoracers - Cookie Cutter 7" rims front and back.

You see plenty of 225/50 or 255/45 race tires on 7" rims at the track, Cookie's, Phone Dials, and old Fuch's.

Good Luck

Thank you much. Do you notice a difference in shift points between tire sizes? These tires are going to have a considerably smaller diameter than my current tires.

Yes, the shift points will change. Theoritically you get out of the corners a bit faster, so you up-shift a little earlier.

If you were previously running a race tire, just a different size, I don't know if you be able to tell much of a difference. However, if your previous tires were street type tires, then yeah...you should notice a big difference. But the main difference is in the sticky race tire, not the size.

Running 225/50 versus the stock 215/60 will cause the speedo, (if you ever get a chance to look at it) to register about 5 mph faster than you are really going.

Good Luck

The big difference that you may feel is that when braking hard it will feel as though you will flip the car end over end. At least thats how I felt the first time on R compund tires. Also a smaller size (radius) tire will be better for Auto-x, I think 225/50 would be perfect for a 944, thats what Im looking for.

I'm also thinking of going 225/50. One more question: the 944 body has some fairly large wheel wells. will a 225/50-15 tire look awkward in terms of asthetics? I'm thinking they won't really fill out the wheel well like they should, but I'm willing to accept that if the performance tradeoff is worth it.

Asthetics?

If you go fast they'll never notice.

Mine definatly look goofy with the small tires, but when I am getting the trophy, no one cares.
