Unhappy Dead ‘spots’ in acceleration

When accelerating with the throttle at over half-way I will get intermittent dead spots.

My speed an reference sensor connections at the harness are questionable at best.

Could this be the cause?

What else could cause this symptom?

Take a look at FRwilks site....

and specially the AFM.

There is a little arm that moves across a contact...... oh never mind.. FR explains it much nicer. You may have a worn spot.....

Yeh, opened that sucker up and cleaned the contact per wilks suggestion.

I didn't bend the arm back and reseat it but I didn't really have big grooves worn in there either.

Does this sound more like AFM or Throttle Sensor stuff?

Better yet... What is it NOT?

............injectors
..............fuel pressure
.........sock tension

It's a throttle switch on the 83 not a sensor.

I'd go with the AFS or a vacuum/fuel pressure problem.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I think I finally got my vacuum issues solved.. Beleive it or not my 83 today...

at a light....at idle

950 idle
1.5 oil pressure
1/2 temp guage

purring like a kitten.....

That, My friends, is a first.

I am thinking now AFS like SoCal.

The only thing is, it doesn't happen in predictable spots and it especially hates it if I try to go towards WOT.?

I had a loose intake on my 83 once. Gave unpredictable indicators too. Be careful in tightening the bolts as they are easy to strip. I used two gaskets on each intake at the head to solve the problem. Intake would not seat at #4 with one set of gaskets.

The AFS wears out. That is the carbon coating on the ceramic resistor wears from the wipers. Moving it, cleaning with electrinic contract spray and doing the wire jumper are all recommended for these older cars. Just don't muck with the spring!

Check the rubber boot from the AFM to the throttle body. Any leaks here will cause running problems. There is a hose connection right at the bottom of that boot that is a real pain to get seated properly if that boot was ever removed.

I did all of that two months ago but couldn't quite swing the jumper wire. It seemed like wherever I put the darned thing it interfeared with the arm movement. I guess I may be looking at a trip back in there.

I will check my intake man bolts. I did the head last year. Just the other day I found that a few of my cam cover bolts had loosened, probably due to gasket shrinkage. Tightened them up to spec. I will check the intake bolts too.
