Gas Leak/ Remove tank

I have only filled up my 924 twice since I owned it. The first time was on the way home after I bought it and my friend noticed there was gas leaking from the gas tank area. I figued I just over filled the tank and it soon stopped after we got on the road. HOME(200MILES) it started to surge just before we got home so i figured the filter might be bad and I changed the fuel filter the next day and the car ran fine after that. Yesterday ( a month later) I filled it up only until it clicked off. I could see no gas leaking but could really smell the gas inside the car . Just before I arrived home (13MILES) my engine started to surg real bad and run very rough I parked it in the garage and just left it alone until today when It started right up and ran as smooth as silk as always. I think I might have a bad gas vent line or gas tank seal leak and maybe excess trash in my tank that is being stirred around when I fill it up. Does this sound right or am I off base here? Is it hard to drop the tank? Please advise.

Seen cracked gas tanks. Seen where speakers have been screwed into the cargo area and the screws have gone through the top of the gas tank that is just under this area. Seen filler and vent hoses that are loose and/or cracked. Seen a loose sender. It's under the round plastic plug just in front of the spare tire well.

A fill up does flood the top of the tank and the filler to tank hoses. You can pull the cover off of the filler and check for loose or cracked hoses. Otherwise you have to drop the trans and drop the fuel tank to check things.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Yep... happened to me (I didn't do the screwing, either)... had to get the gas tank pulled and repaired. Still not 100% sure if it was the screws, but the timing was pretty close (within a couple of weeks). Either way, these tanks can crack... usually around the top areas, where the tank bends/curves.

85.5 and later are plastic. Early 944's are steel.
