New owner (long post)
Hi all-
i've been lurking since i got my 944, a few weeks ago. great stuff on this forum. So here's what I got: ![]() ![]() ![]() my uncle used to race porsches in the VA/MD area and now that he's retired he's selling them..this is one of the last two. it started out as a 1983 N/A (he's the original owner) and over the years evolved into an 89 3.0 N/A with updated body styling, with the original interior. the engine is basically new, about 10k miles on it, and mechanically it's in very very good shape. has some track modifications, including but not limited to: -new brakes, the biggest my porsche mechanic has ever seen on a 944..not sure how to figure out exactly what they are, but it stops about as well as my friend's infiniti g35. -all aftermarket suspension, i believe it's koni but there could be some bilstein stuff on there too. -brake ducts -heater core bypass -rollcage (i removed it cause i won't be racing it and you couldn't open the roof with it in, let alone sit in the backseat. -had a straight pipe but i got the cat back from him cause i need it to pass emissions anyway, after EXTENSIVE cleaning (it had been sitting in his driveway in the shade for about 4 years) and changing all the fluids and filters, as well as a new battery, i fired it up and it ran great. the interior was in pretty good shape, dash is cracked (natch), and rear seats have seen better days, but the front seats have been covered since he got it, so they are basically perfect (except for a small rip in the vinyl caused by my stupidity..any suggestions?). carpet's pretty faded, when i have the money i'll get a new carpet kit. you'll notice it's missing the crest, the foglights and the wheel centers..i'm pretty sure my uncle has all of those, they were just taken off due to track regulations (safety hazard i guess)...gotta at least get the crest, otherwise how will anyone know it's a porsche? the exterior is in pretty good shape, there's some chipped paint on the hood and it looks like a battery exploded at one point (black pockmarks all over the right fender and side mirror) but overall it looks nice, and i'm looking forward to waxing it with s100 carnuba to give it that "wet shine" look. anyway, onto the important stuff. here's as complete a list as i can remember of what's been done to it or is currently being done (it's at the mechanic right now): -oil change + filter (mobil 1) -coolant flush -air filter -fuel filter (drained the tank and filled it up with good gas an stp before i started it up) -belt check (all look and feel good, including t-belt, but the mechanic is double checking) -new tires, battery, headlights, wiper blades -flushed brake fluid, put in super blue -new thermostat (just in case) -gear oil change the mechanic is working on: -putting the cat back on and doing a tune up (or tune down?) -seeing if he can fix the speedo, the cable was disconnected (i assume due to new wheels, brakes etc. if not i guess i'll have to get an aftermarket and stick it on the dash...bummer) -alignment -getting the heater and a/c in working condition anyway, the story goes like this: i got my insurance and temp tags in order just in to drive it monday morning, and sunday night while i'm focusing the headlights the battery dies. i give it a jump, but it's not holding a charge..uh oh. turns out either the voltage regulater or the alternator is broken. so i had it towed to the shop on monday last and it's been there ever since (guess they're busy)... my first question is, have i missed anything? hopefully the mechanic will do a good check, but if there's anything i should be looking out for especially please mention it. i'm sure i'll have plenty more, but i've gotta get it back (i never knew what it was to be in withdrawl before) and start monkeying around with it more. i've got some new weatherstripping and hatch struts to install, and new white guage faces, as well as a complete sound system from crutchfield (no big sub boxes tho, i'm building small removable enclosures for the cargo compartments. i like to HEAR it, not see it. that's it for now. again, this forum is great. cheers, ernest

Congrats Ernest and Welcome to the board!
Be patient with your upgrades. Spend a month or two's budget on making sure everything is running and working right first. Sounds like you are heading in the right direction though.

Is it a 3.0 because you dropped in a S motor, or 3.0 because you increased the displacement of a stock 2.5 or 2.7 motor?

It's an S motor. I haven't quite been able to find the answer to this: what's the difference between 944S and 944S2? they were both being produced in 1989 i believe..

Welcome to the board........
You mention ...mechanic is checking the belts. Just to be safe I would swap them out..... Cheap insurance. Take a pic of the engine bay and it will be pretty obvious what engine you are running....

Congrats on your Porsche!
I would love the ower of the 3.0...Sounds like a good setup and the Turbo look is sweet too! I think the 944S's were just sold in 87 and 88, its was the DOHC version of the 2.5...rated at 188 HP... Good luck/skill

You can pick up an adjustable voltage regulator for $20 or so. IceShark on this board sold me mine.
Cured all my charging woes *knock on wood* Also, i wouldnt be surprised to hear the the master cylinder died or will die soon Welcome to the board!

First off, welcome to the board!
I thought the main distinguishing feature of the S2 was the DOHC setup. I'd second changing the belts, new belts = cheap, old broken (well adjusted) belt = expensive. Plus you've got twice as many valves to dent! Considering you've got a newer suspension with differnet brakes, you probably don't have the hole through the wheel spindle to hook up the speedo. Once again, welcome to the board. (Can I get a pic of your brake setup?)
