(Is this where we direct our newest member to the search button?) Seriously though, There is a pretty steep learning curve to get over on the 944. If these cars are not cheap. If you can set aside say, one $200 car payment a month for the first few years of ownership you should be fine. The only problem with this car being a WIP and a daily driver is that many of the repairs require down time. You can't just go up to the local pep boys or napa and pic up this stuff. Even getting raped at the porsche dealership will take time...most of our parts need to be ordered ( at 3x the price) I am not trying to discourage you, just put the car in perspective. |
A 92 VR4 costs ALOT more for parts i believe. I think a new transmission is in the range of $5,000, new turbos are $2,000, plus any engine sensor is over $300. I am not worried about this car breaking, because i do not see a repair that is more costly than i can afford. There doesnt seem to be any extremely expensive repairs like witht he VR4. A spun bearing happened to like 1 out of every 2 people who owned one so i must say it's a relief not to have that problem. Transfer cases locked up which usually are covered by the dealer unless you modified you car. Transmission synchros broke easily, 18 spline transmissions and transfer cases went the easiest, ouput shafts snapped.
I don't mind down time, but if i take care of this car, perform routine maintainence, preventative maintainence, and set asside a little extra cash i think i should be covered. In any case i think i am better off than with my previous car. |
Also today for no reason both fans started to work correctly and kept my engine temp around half way. It was about 85 degrees today so i guess that is fine. Engine oil pressure was also fine, and no i didnt put any sea foam in my oil yet. You only do that before oil changes because it's not a good idea to drive for prolonged periods with it in your oil. Also it doesnt hurt the cat, it's supposed to clean it. Regardless of weather it did, as long as i pass emmisions i dont care.

The 944 leaks past the rings more than other cars. So some of anything you put through the intake will make it into the oil.
The ONLY thing you may want to put into the intake is a bottle of injector cleaner. |
Sea foam is injector cleaner..... It will clean just about anything. So why do our rings leak so much? Is it because of the iron coating? I thought there was some kind of ceramic coating as well?
Once again my fans stopped working. Is there a relay i should replace, or just the switch? |

Fans - check all fuses and gently push on all relays. Check actual conection at the fans. Clean your grounds...start with the battery...this can help with other problems as well. |

Putting your SemenCrap through the booster line didn't do anything for the injectors. More than likey just blew off a layer of carbon on top of the cylinders if anything at all. Then a bit of water will do that too. |
But i was saying if it were dangerous for my rings and oil, then why would it be any safer as injector cleaner and oil detergent? I am running injector cleaner right now, but i am running that guaranteed to pass emissions stuff which is an extrmely strong cleaner that i know works regarless of emmisions.

Not necessarily dangerous unless you have significant blow by and did contaminate your oil. This will thin it out and ruin the bearings. I suggest changing the oil and the filter. Use a MAHLE filter as this has the check valve that keeps the oil from draining off.
As to your emissions test: The O2 sensor is usually the major problem with not passing. If all of your categories are high then you have a bad CAT. You can use a gerneric O2 sensor. Get the Bosch. About $35. Next is a worn AFS (air flow sensor). That is the metal boxy thing bolted to the air cleaner box. This can be tweaked so the resistor wiper tracks in fresh carbon. See www.frwilk.com. The DME system is self correcting to a point so the addition of a "passing fluid" is usually not necessary. |

Admitedly Shawn used it with good intentions. Might work on an old Ford but really doesn't do much on a newer electronic injected car. Do hope he changes his oil though.

never heard of that stuff.
I refrain from putting ANY additives in my cars. It can cost you alot more to do a repair. The only thing i have ever put in was Bars Stop Leak for a coolant leak on a trip. As soon as I got home, i repalced the water pump. Alot of those additives react with aluminum dont they? |
