No oil = Big Trouble

oh geez, in an earlier post I said I was the stupidest man alive. Now I really can prove that.

I bought my 951 a lil over a month ago and the oil checked out fine. I saw no reason to change it yet because there was enough in it. So I'm driving down the highway, doin about 55 and all of a sudden there is a clanking sound. Then the dash starts getting a lil warm, then hot. I pulled over immediatly and popped the hood. Checked the oil and it was dry as a bone. I added 5 quarts of oil and the sound was still tehre but a lil better. Anyway I took no chances and had the car towed back home. Now it was only running for about 1 minute with the sounds until I pulled over and had it stopped.

Several people told me I blew my engine, and some just said rod bearing. What am I up against? Hopefully something cheap? (In my case never is). I'm only 20 so my budget is very limited but can get ahold of the moeny over the summer. Thanks you all.

Oh and jsut so you know the car is sitting at my house now and I have no intentions of movingit until I know whats up. Thanks again.

Is the car still leaking as it sits? With the type of oil loss you have described it sounds like locating the leak should be easy. As far as whether you damaged internal components, in my past experiences working at a shop in my youth, it only takes moments of running a dry engine to wreck it. Customers used to tell me about their oil light coming on, usually that light means too late. In cars like ours with dwindling values you might have totaled it.

thats the thing it didn't leak at all. so I don't get it. And the oil light did not come on either. so no friggin clue on this one. Yeah I know I may have just killed the engine but it would cost me more to buy a new car rather then just buy a new/used motor or attempt to rebuild this one.

Ok Then fill it up with oil, run it in the driveway and search for the leak. If you find it doesn't leak then run it and see how feels.

it still makes the lous knocking noise though. what should i do about that?

if it's making a knocking noise ...and it's full of oil, then ...I think it probably has an internal problem that needs to be addressed...Bummer

yeah that's what I think too. how hard is it for an amateur machanic to rebuild an engine himself? obviously more difficult because i don't ahve any of the proper tools.

my dad wrenched for forty years and I worked on cars with him for 6 years. IMHO, without a proper shop, lift and previous experience it would be very difficult. There are also special tools that come into play, if the car is worth it and you really like it, you might consider looking for a mechanic to do it. Even with my experience and my dad at my side and access to a lift...I still choose carefully which repairs to do myself. as Clint Eastwood once said..a good man has to know his limitations..Good luck!!

Haha I like that one. THanks a lot, well to look at the bright side, I've always wanted to do some engine mods to it so this might jsut give me the chance. Anyone from Oregon experienced with rebuilding want to give me a hand?
