1989 944 Balance shaft belt replacement
How do you replace the balance shaft belt on a 1989 944 that has the self tensioner? Thanks

The balance shaft belt does not use the tensioner. The timing belt does.
Should replace both at the same time. Did the balance belt break?

1989 944 Balance shaft belt
The balance shaft belt broke. It looks like it was in decent condition and the timing belt looks fine but I probably should replace them both. I do wonder why the one belt broke.
I have plenty of time to do the work. Thanks for the expertise or experience... or both John |

Do both. Always do both. The tension on the timing belt is more critical than the balance belt tension. However the balance belt can be a bit loose compared to the timing belt.
The tension pulleys should be replaced at the slightest indication of drying out and/or getting loose. The smooth rollers are there to kept the belt from slapping around. These should be replace if they are loose. Also check out Danno's Racer-X's site: http://members.rennlist.com/951_racerx/

Do you have instructions for replacing the timing belt and balance belt for a 1989 944 that has the self tensioner?

check out the info on clarks-garage.com I used his garage "how to" section to change the belts on my 89 with no problem.
