Porsche Crest Water Pump Replacement

Hi,

I am going to replace the water pump on my early 1985 porsche 944 and heard that this job is quite an ordeal. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions and if anyone knows where I can get the tool to get the camshaft and balance belts tool that the Haynes manual says only mechanics can get. Thanks.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

If your 944 is like a 951 (and I think it is), you are going to have to lock the crank shaft at the starter housing in order to remove the crank pulley. Crank pulley has to come off to get rear dust cover of timing belt housing out. Water pump is behind that.

Oh, oh, SoCal, you are starting something with Krikit comment. Actually, I've used one for 7 years now. Works just fine.

Starting something? Not with the Krikit. One of these days I have to get one to check my custom tensioning.

well, if you are going to do the pump, then you are the mechanic, so you can find the tool, or borrow one from a mechanic friend. where are you located??? upgrading to the autotensioners??

I some how don't think socal is worried about his method, nor should any other who does the same. The auto tensioner gives you a peace of mind? I call bs on that, they fail too.

hey, replace all your oil seals for peace of mind. i put a timing belt on a car once and didn't replace the oil seals, then they leaked. what an annoying job to do twice. good luck
