Ball Joints

Early car, steel a-arms. The new ball joints does not rotate in the socket. They don't move, period. The ones I pulled off do, so does a damn near new one I was sent by a fellow pelicanhead. It may be me, but this just doesn't sound right. Any thoughts?

The mounting flange on the ball joint has a pitch to it as well, it's not inline with the other 3 (used) I have, but it will mate to the arms no prob. Surely, the flange doesn't bend over time, does it?

New ball joints should be STIFF. Think about what they do for a living. You replace them when they have some amount of play.

Are you having trouble installing them? The pin can be a PITA to line up. Try jacking the brake rotor up then lining the hole up with the pin of the ball joint and lowering the jack to seat the knuckle over the ball joint.

Thanks for the answer, I just didn't have any idea what new one were supposed to be like. No problems, why not put the pin in, then tighten down the the bolts securing it to the a-arm? Seems like the easiest way, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I really do need to get off my duff!

When I intsalled mine, I removed the entire a-arms, installed the ball joints, then reinstalled the a-arms, securing the ball joint to the spindles first.

Oh to be one of the select few with early a-arms. The proposed joy of unbolting 6 whole bolts to do both sides. Wanna try ball joints in a late style car? I'm not a female, but I put it up there with childbirth.

Eight bolts. You forgot the ones that hold the ball pin to the spindle.

What about the ones that hold the sway bar to the control arm, that makes 10.

Mine seemed to move enough to leave them bolted in. But it is easier if you drop the four bolts that holds the sway bar to the chassis. Other wise it's a total of 16 bolts.

So, lets see.
1. Control Arm to crossmember
2/3. Control Arm to chassis
4. Ball joint
5. Sway bar to control arm
6/7. Sway bar to chassis
8/9/10 Ball joint to control arm

Thats 10 per side. Plus 5 lug nuts is 15 And then the splash shield is another 4-6 (depending on how many are still there) makes like 22.

You don't have to take the arm off of the chassis.

My shield is hanging in the garage where it has been for over ten years.

Forgot the lug nuts.

Now how many turns on all the bolts does it take?

No So-Cal what is the cumulative amount of torque applied to the bolts in the above proceedure?

OK! I figure about 24 maybe 36 ounces.

That's two or three beers.

Wow! I only counted 9 per arm.
1 cross member
2 caster
3 ball joint
2 sway bar
1 spindle.

I'm not counting the other two sway per side, nor the sheild (don't use it anyway) Lugs? Who needs them anyway?
