944 Wheel Balance Possible Fix + Other Questions!

Hi,

I am recent to the Porsche ownership club after purchasing a '87 944 Lux only a couple of weeks ago. Although the car is generally very good condition there were one or two small faults that I had identified needed attention. Firstly the steering wheel juddered at 60-70mph therefore thought I needed the rims balancing.
After a thorough search through past posts in this forum I was convinced that I would need to get them balanced on the car. I thought i'd check the front end before taking it to be balanced and quickly noticed that the Porsche wheel nuts are superbly light pieces of kit but the locking wheel nut that was fitted was not and weighed the equivalent of at least the other 4 nuts. Removing this locking nut and replacing it with another Porsche nut cured the problem 100%. Just thought it may help at least some of you guys out there.

Just out of interest I have a couple of questions that I could do with some info on if at all possible:-

The car has a Carrera badge on the back which I presume is a non standard boy racer (Bean Tin exhaust style!) addition?

One headlight lowers slightly further than the other. Is there any adjustment to bring this in line with the body panels?

Regards,

Steve

Should be adjustable stops around the headlights. Know there is one for fully open. Think closed might be the hinge point adjustments but would have to look at mine.

Be careful as the head lights can take off on their own IF you don't disconnect the battery or the plug at the rotation motor.

"Bean tin". Beans do come in large cans.

How are the timing and balance belts? You should change these out if you have no idea of their age. Personally I would change them out anyway not trusting what most PO's say.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

The Porsche key-style locking wheel nut is always installed in line with the valve. The later, socket-type locking wheel nuts weigh the same as the normal ones and can be put anywhere. Wheel shimmy can also be caused by wheel alignment and/or tire type.

The headlights are adjusted through the cross-bar slotted mounting bolts

Also, don't rule out ball joints as the source of a vibration.
