Upgraded ignition system
 

I was looking around for ignition systems and am not sure which would be best. I would prefer to get an MSD, but if there is another type good for the 944 then i am open to suggestions. I am replacing the coil and wires, anything else i should replace?

I don't know that they are bad, but i would like a better ignition system. The car has a broken odometer at 128k miles, so it's about time start replacing the wires and coils.

I would replace with OEM bits, theres nothing wrong with the original components.

Replace the cap and rotor as well. Use OEM Bosch, here's why:

wow that sucks. Did it still run like that? Where can i get the OEM rotor and cap? When i re-time the engine, what is it supposed to be at? 17 degrees BTDC?

You don't retime these engines. The timing is set by the metal pin on the fly wheel.

As has been previously suggested get the Haynes manual and read all you can at www.clarks-garage.com and www.frwilk.com.

As to OEM parts there are many mail order stores (Pelican included) that you can order from.

Yeah i have the Haynes manual. I havent looked at it yet because i havent really started to order parts yet. I don't think i am gonna do anything with the ignition system because it seems to be working fine. I was wondering though if the distributor should be loose. I can wiggle mine up and down.

The two spring loaded arms on the dist cap have to fit in the catches for them on the aluminum housing.

Hey i have a quick question for you SoCal. I have those new gauges i am installing and they have new senders. Can i use the ones on the car now or do i have to change them? Not that i am lazy, but the oil pressure sensor doesnt have two fittings like the stock one does.

I would have to read the instructions that came with your new gauges. Personally I would make adaptors from the stock wires to the new gauge plugs so I could put the stock gauges back in IF I needed too.

Here are the directions:

Oil gauge:
S= To oil sender
G= Ground
I= Gauge power (key on)

Temp Gauge:
S= To temp sender
G= Ground
I= Gauge power (key on)

And that's it. Also i removed my intake filter which was clogged up with, no lie, 2 inches of fur just sitting on top of it. It looked like my engine tried to suck in a sheep. There was oil in it as well. A nice puddle of oil. I know that is most likely my fault when i had the CD2 to a full oil system and didnt drain any.

Fur? Probably fungus from sitting.

I'll have to check the wiring diagrams. Note your Haynes has the same wiring diagrams. Pelican has these in the 944 tech section too.

Well the wiring will work perfectly, because the senders only have one wire coming out of them which is what i need to hook the new ones up. I was just wondering if they will read the same if i use those senders rather than replacing them.

I guess i can just splice into the wire in the dash that goes to the water sender and check. I know that worked, but the oil gauge wasnt very constant. Will this hurt my new gauge if it doesnt work?
