Porsche 944 AIR FLOW SENSOR

83' 944 : The car will not start unless we take the rubber hose slightly loose between the AIR FLOW SENSER and the THROTTLE VAVLE the will then start, but runs rough and if I retightin the clamp it acts like its getting alot of fuel and I have to feather the throttle to keep it runing and then it dies.

P.S We checked voltage on the airflow sensor 10.33 as we opened the airflow door the voltage goes down to 1.83 HELP help HELP!!

Voltage should be linear in it's drop. You may have a spot at the idle possition that is worn.

Check out www.frwilk.com for instructions on how to relocate the wiper contacts inside the AFS.

Did this happen all at once?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the early AFMs have a non-linear curve ???

but then again, I'm stupid enough to have had a BMW AFM on mine

From FR_Wilks site :
Early AFM curve

Late AFM curve:

I had this same problem today after i cleaned and reinstalled the intake valve. First you should check that the sensor on the bottom is properly set in place and adjusted, Hayes manual covers this procedure. Once you do that and say **** that didnt work . Sit back and breath a moment. Now loosen the idle screwtil the throttle plate closes all the way. Turn it a slight bit open and closed you should hear a "click" as u go to full closed to slightly open. Start tightening the screw back down until it is just about on the "click" then go just enough past it so that whne u let off throttle it wont go back past "click". This will bypass the fuel cutoff. Now it all comes down to the bypass screw on the side of the unit loosen = more air. There is more on this at If that still doesnt fix it i would think vacuum.

Shouldn't the air flow meter go from ~1 UP to ~10 volts as it opens?

Hey sorry I havent been able to get on the computer latly Im having some trobles with it. I thing it was the O2 sensor we took it out cleaned it with some contact cleaner added 2 washers to it and put it back in, added the washers so it wouldnt be right in the main stream of the airflow. It seems to be running great so far. Ill answer some of the other question later this computer it acting up again sorry.
Thanks for all the info.
