hey guys

hey whats up guys..matt here. I used to own a 1984 924 that was my first car (I was 17 when i had it..gaurds red, ROH Spiders, Borla muffler. Bought it from my friend for $1500) but I only owned it for 6 months because I couldnt afford the insurance on it. Now that I have a better job and substantially more income, Im looking about buying a 944. There is a guy local that is selling one for about $2500..looks to be a good fixer upper...dash cracked, and the from the doors to the nose of the car the paint is faded, which leads me to believe the car had work done to it. The front has a small ding in the nose, and the bumper is pushed in a little on one side and the foglights are beat and cracked. Im going to meet the guy up tomorrow to see if the car runs (he wasnt home). Anything I should look for guys? I know the speedo cable is prone to stop working, but anything else that I should be aware of that might be a problem?

I didnt know the first thing about cars back when I was 17, but now I work as a mechanic (built the car listed in the sig), so anything major, such as a clutch job will most likely be handled by myself (yeah I know they are a pain but it cant be harder than changing a clutch in a 91 Eclipse AWD turbo). Thanks for the input guys....

Timing belt. Check and see how recent of a belt it has on it. Any service records would be nice. Also how old is the clutch. Check the carpet behind the clutch pedal and see if the master cylinder has leaked or leaking. Check the cooling system. Let it run and see if the fans click on.
Drive it and listen for any clicks from the rear end. That would be bad CV joints.

hes got no plates on the car and the back tire is kinda flat...hopefully he will be a kind enough guy to tell me all...cuse then i can knock the price down some more...

so tryin to take it for a spin is out of the question....jump starting it in the driveway would work...

If you can't test drive it, I wouldn't bother.

$2500 seems really high for not being able to test drive it, and it sounds like it has been sitting for a while, so I'd say it WILL need t-belt and B-belt and seals. I got my 924S for $500, it needs paint some interior work, already did belts and seals did valves, needs power window switchs, and STOCK AIRBOX/FILTER.

Go to the tech artical section of this board and read AFjuvats artical on buying a 944.

Sounds like you are looking at a $1000 car to me. It will take the rest of your budget to get it up and going....I might go to $1500 but that is pushing it.

Good luck

well i went back to see him and he started the car for me...runs perfectly fine. Had a clutch job done at 67K miles, new alternator, new a/c compressor, and better yet, a practically brand new motor. The first motor had a timing belt job done that went bad and screwed it up, so the one that is in the car now was out of another 85, that had the head repaired (new valves, guides, etc, and a turbo cam) and the bottom end was rebuilt with fresh bearings. Oil pressure is around 2-3 bar at idle when warm..which is a good thing. The body isnt as bad as I thought in the front, just could use a good wax job. straight exhaust with a glasspack muffler (very loud).

I think i'm going to the bank tomorrow to see what I can do about a loan

If you get it, replace the timing and balance belts right away. They get hard when the car sits for a while.

will do..i'll ask him how long its been sitting. I forgot to mention the reason why hes selling it is cuse he cant afford to maintain two of them (he has a very clean black one). The only thing wrong with this car is that when he took it to get an alignment..they ****ed the rack up and bent the shaft inside of it (apparently you are supposed to center the rack with a pin or something to lock it in place, and they just shoved and hammered it in and bent it..correct me if im wrong) so he said a new rack would be 250 and it takes less than an hour to replace (car has no power steering).

I went to the bank today and it looks very positive that I will be approved, so by wednesday or thursday i could have the car...
