Refinishing Phone dials
I need some info on how to restore a set of 16' phone dials for my 87 944S. The PO painted them silver to cover up the black paint to cover up the aluminum . Should I use a chemical paint stripper and then polish with dremel? Or some other method.

I believe they were painted from the factory.

Once you remove the old paint, Griotsgarage.com has a "German wheel refinishing kit". I'm not really a fan of Griot's, as most of their stuff is too overpriced, but I refinished my 16" phone dials last summer with this kit and they still look brand new.
Also, painting your centercap crests is a great touch (while your at it).

I used the DupliColor stuff on some hubcaps for my ex-GF's Nissan Sentra, I thought that the metallic in the paint was a little coarser than the stock paint finish. Have they improved it some since then? (this was a few years ago.) Looking at the same job myself and trying to decide if the extra cost of the Wuerth paint is worth it. Does anyone sell it cheaper than Griot's?

It didnt seem too coarse to me, but Theres no way I'm spending the $$ on a spray can of Wuerth....It really seems overpriced to me

wow, google can be your friend. I found this link also
http://academic.pg.cc.md.us/~mhubley/Porsche/wheels.html I'm going to be away on business for a few weeks. I might take the rims with me and work on them in the hotel room. Can only watch so much tv.

along the same lines, does anyone in the DC area have a set of late offset 15" wheels, any condition, that they would be willing to lend me for a month or so? I'd like to paint my wheels but I have doubts in my ability to do a good job in a single day, and I'm kind of a busy guy as well, so I don't always have time to work on them.
If your wheels are in nice condition, I'd be willing to entertain the idea of me repainting two sets of wheels and returning one to you all nice and shiny in return for my use of them. thanks, nate
