Broken sensor housing
 
the housing that the two sensors sit in at the back of the engine has broken away - looks like one bolt fell out and it was too much for the other to hold - would this cause the engine to just quit and then start back up only when it felt like it?
Does anyone have one of these housings that I could buy, and how much?

Yep, that would cause it. you should remove your sensors and make sure they are ok. They are the speed and reference sensors. One lets your DME know when TDC is achieved and the other counts the flywheel teeth to let DME know the RPMs of the engine. I have the bracket. $10 plus s/h. it's for a reg 944. not S2 or 924.

yep. learned it all the hardest way there is. I didn't even know there were sensors there when I changed out my flex plate. Wondered where all these spools of copper wire came from. I'll knock the price of the bracket down to $10 even, as long as it doesn't cost more than a couple bucks to ship.

and I'll throw in instructions from the fact. manual on how to set your bracket so that the TDC pin doesn't sheer you TDC sensor off. Don't ask me how I know what happens if you set the bracket wrong. Just don't ask.

Not to high-jack your post but when I took these two sensors out one of them was not connected to anything. The one that is closer to the drivers side. What does it do and isn't it supposed to be plugged in????

The one nearest the engine marks TDC by waiting for a metal pin to fly by that's attached to your flywheel. One nearest the driver marks RPMs by counting the teeth of your starter ring. I don't see how it ran w/o it being hooked up since you have to have 200 RPM to get the fuel pump to run.

The 'S' model, double overhead cams, uses only one sensor for both the speed and the reference.

The extra sensor on cars after 1985 is used for dealer diagnostics -- sometimes.

With an 'S' it's very important to keep tabs on the chain tensioner pad, chain and timing belt.

Doing the timming belt once I put the clutch back in. I am going to look at the pads and chain then. Should I do the stuff on the head before or after the belts?

Thanks for the heads up on the other sensor. I was wondering what was going on with that thing??? Should I even put it back in? I guess it will plug the hole and that is better than nothing.

I had two ground wires running off the far passenger side of the bracket.

Hope that helps. Ground wires "should" be brown.

The "extra" sensor can be left off. I don't thnk the dealer even use it any more. But then who can afford to take their car to a dealer!

I think that the bracket for the single sensor is different than the one for the two sensors. Then maybe not. Picture?

On that note do I have to set the clearance after I take them out?? The bracket hasn't moved but the sensors are out. Do I just slide them in?
