speedometer question.

just noticed that my speedometer is not registering miles, and the trip meter is stuck on 000miles. does this mean i have to send the speedo away to be repaired, or is there a simple fix,:ie, replacing gears etc??any comments?
when i replaced all the bulbs a couple of months ago, i wish this problem had appeared then!
bob.

Resetting the odometer while the car is moving breaks the brittle little plastic gears in the odo drive. Sounds like that's what happened. Is a well known VDO trait.

If you fix it yourself, the broken seals on the back of the speedo will make future buyers wary. Send it out.

hi singpilot/fr wilk. it would appear that i can fix it myself then.
my car is originally from florida, so the main reading is in mph, with smaller kph in the center.

oh jeez.....so that's how it broke...

9 years ago.....yeah, my car has super low miles!!!!!

swimmingly 06-11-2004 09:58 PM

Wow, you drove 9 years with it broken?!

dangerous 06-11-2004 10:36 PM

yeah....well it would turn from time to time for few miles then stop for a few days/weeks/months....but I kept track of the maint and I was living in Germany most of the time so the MPH od really wasn't that useful....

I kinda miss that metric system actually......

scheistermeiste 06-11-2004 10:49 PM

wow all the new people come out of the wood work for this one!

dangerous 06-11-2004 11:25 PM

LOL
yeah...well I thought I'd come in and mention a brilliant revolutionary idea of making an N/A into a Turbo...

hehehehe

wow...that "new guy" sure made a big splash eh!!!! some kid just last month.... there was blood all over the computer screen from the raping he took. I couldn't stop laughing.....that was when I registered here...I just had to.

oh man it cracks me up just thinking about it....

mambodave 06-12-2004 08:09 AM

Find a new cluster with similar milage and put it in...

Don 944 LA 06-12-2004 03:54 PM

doesn't it break if you reset it.... if it's about to break anyway ???

seems like the added torque of the reset does the final blow to the gears ???

correct me if I'm wrong...

dangerous 06-12-2004 04:54 PM

I've been hit....over
I'm going down.....over

splash........

944imraan 06-14-2004 04:52 PM

Wait, so we're not supposed to reset the trip meter while we're driving? Tell me that isn't so.

mambodave 06-14-2004 04:56 PM

Lets all break ours and tell prospective buyers "Thats just the way 944's Are"

To add to a few of the things iv have been told while shopping for a 944...

"They also go through a quart of oil every tank of gas"

"That grinding noise is normal for a porsche"

"What noise? I dont hear any noise!?"

944imraan 06-14-2004 05:08 PM

To add to that: a 911 salesguy in the showroom says: "Porsche will tell you that oil is a consumable. They burn it, you see, and the new ones leak it."

When I bought mine it burnt about a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. It now burns maybe 1 pint every 3,000 miles. All I did was start driving it more often. It seems that what had happened was that the cam tower gasket was a little leaky from having set for so long and driving the car again with good oil circulating got the seal to re-seat itself. :)

It's amazing how much it helps to just drive the dang thing. They hate sitting.

A sitting Porsche is a criminal act.

That should have been one of the first things you learned when researching these cars before you bought one. Next thing I know, you'll tell us that you didn't know that the timing belt needs to be re-tensioned at the 1,000 and 15,000 mile marks and replaced at the 30,000 mile mark.

You did have the belts replaced when you bought the car, right?

Aaron

mambodave 06-14-2004 05:19 PM

Its funny....I drive mine almost daily now..it doesnt leak and it never uses any oil.

944imraan 06-15-2004 03:55 AM

Belt tensioning I'm good with. The fact that these cars are simultaneously so tough and yet so delicate still gets me some days. Now I just need to find a girl like that...
