idiot light failed this idiot

Driving down the fwy with the gas needle on E! (R!?) thinking that I'd put gas in it when the light came on ($2.56/gal it's voodoo economics to wait, but I'm a goat killin kinda guy). Whistled a little tune as I passed the last gas station for 3.5 mi. Puttrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrputrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrputputrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
uh-oh, I know that sound. the light never came on and it was steady losing power. Pretty soon it's 45mph down the fwy and I finally came to the off ramp. Barely! made it to the Mobil station. Coasted to the pumps. Whew!

When my needle dips below the 1/4 full mark it enters the twilight zone, so i'm never brave enough to let it go too low.

ilikemy944 06-08-2004 06:18 PM

lol... I frequent my gas light :P

Happened to me in my TT last week, my fault thou, the stupid digital read out told me I had another 10 miles...
I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the way from work, all of a sudden she sputtered and shut off. Felt like an idiot calling road side assistance in the middle of the highway in rush hour traffic. Couldn't even get the car to the shoulder.

SoCal Driver 06-08-2004 07:57 PM

Did that once. The warning light had been on for a while. I ignored it. Idled up an off ramp, around a corner and into an all night gas station.

1/4 mark is my refill mark..... as stated above.... after the last 1/4 its the twilight zone...... I've run out of gas twice before on other cars...... and I felt stupid and realised what a useless thing a car is without gas..... I never want that feeling with my P car. Also.... a P car in the side the road is what people who don't own one love to see.

Paul Glasson 06-09-2004 06:33 AM

1/4 for me when light comes on, after breaking down on a deserted road at night with daughter in car and calling breakdown - thought it was electrics/DME since gauge showed about 1/8

bigyagi 06-09-2004 08:45 AM

yes, i never let the gauge go below the quarter mark either. apart from anything else, can you imagine the bottom of your fuel tank, after 20 years?, and then you are going to let the fuel go right down, and let all that sludge and dirt get sucked up, and where does it go then??.
hmm, i wonder if it matters if you have a "k+n "cone filter in there, or a genuine porsche one?? ha ha!!

Long standing myth; gravity dictates your car is always sucking from the bottom of the tank...it really isn't an issue.

What he said^^^

bigyagi 06-11-2004 12:13 AM

yes, i agree about the gravity effect. when you have a full tank of gas, it should be no problem, but when you are down to the very last drops of gas, that would be a problem with sh%t getting sucked up.

Brando 06-11-2004 01:15 AM

well, only if dirt floats...

bryanthompson 06-11-2004 04:01 AM

Even if a little dirt/icky stuff did get sucked in... isn't that what a fuel filter is there for?

bigyagi 06-11-2004 07:20 AM

you know what they say floats, right?

adida(r 944) 06-11-2004 10:46 PM

dont mean to hyjack this thread... but...

i get about 210-230 miles at 1/8 a tank or mark before "R". how many miles are you guys reporting when at this point?

trying to figure out what i should be getting for mileage.

Brando 06-11-2004 11:07 PM

about 300...

Zero10 06-13-2004 09:15 PM

Hmm. I always run mine down until the light comes on. I usually have (give or take) 90-110km's once the light comes on when city driving, or about 150 when on the highway. My light comes on too early though. It comes on after the needle is below the R, but the tank still has about 18 litres left, instead of 8.

To answer the earlier question, I usually have about 500-550km's before it gets down to about 1/8 tank.

Brando 06-13-2004 10:35 PM

how many miles is that?
