RE: Gearbox noise

DKW, did you ever figure out what was wrong? I am having the exact problem you were having.:mad:

Noise seems to be coming from the transmission area. I recently replaced the trans fluid with redline MTL, I wonder if that did anything?

My trans is noisy too, I think its related to the 5th gear rattle so many have mentioned on these forums.

This is my second transmission and they both made the same noise as described in this thread. My most recent trans was inspected by the place I bought it from (Flying horse motorsports) - Dimi said it looked like it had been recently rebuilt as the bearings and everything looked good.

All 3 Porsches I've had have had some gearbox noise. Not so bad with the carpet in, but kinda noisy with it out. I had a lsd installed in one, and and tranny rebuilt at the same time, -still noisy. Another guy openened it up to re-install the oil cooler, he said the r&p were set up perfect, -still noisy. I think some noise is normal.

Im with jimbilly - I think these transmissions are just noisy. Im gonna roll with it. FWIW the rear half of my car, from the front seats back, is stripped with no carpet. I noticed that without carpet and sound deadening the transmission noise is substantially louder.

Hi all

I have a 1987 2.5 8v 944 which I really enjoy driving but it has an annoying noise coming from the back end!

When I accelerate there is no noise but if I back off and let the car decelerate there is a metalic whining/grinding noise from the back end, If I press the clutch down the noise goes away, but when I let the clutch out it's back again, but it only happns when the car is decelerating!

It happens when the car is cold or hot and in all gears!

I have checked the fluid level and its fine!

Any ideas?

I have the same whine in my upper gears, if I lets off of the throttle its noisey, give er the gas it get quiet. Its the syncros when they wear they let off a noise. Change the tranny fluid, check for shavings and if it checks out, get some more tranny fluid and drive easily. My tranny has made noise for a good 10 years and no Kablammos, so theres that. If you listen to old VW beetles from the 50s, they grind and squeel pretty bad also. Noisy but they work fine..
