Anyone who has done a clutch job

I just put my new (sachs) release bearing and pressure plate together and (as usuall) I have a question.

My bearing came with 3 thin washers like the two in the photo.

I took apart my old setup and it only had one (see other photo)

I put the new one together with only one of them. Now I am worring that I should use them. Why else were they there?

When I push down on the pressure plate while looking at the side with the C-clip it has about 2mm of play. Is that normal?

I used all of them. FWIW I don't remember how many were in there before I took it apart.

Sure a scummy looking throwout bearing for a new one.

I thought the new one looked a little shinny so I sanded it down and left it outside in a wet sock for a couple of days to get it "looking right". We don't want the "host car" regecting the new part.

Nah, it is my old one I had already assembled the new one and didn't feel like taking that snap-ring out (not very good with those) for the photo.

So, do I need all three? Is that amount of play (with the spring washer on the other side compressed) good?

You use as many shims as possible to eliminate play in the bearing - usually you use 2 or 3 of them.

I just did my clutch job and I remember seeing 3 thin washers. I used all 3.

When I did my clutch job I only needed 2 of them. I agree with AFJuvat, just use as many as you need. I looked to see the spacing on the old one and matched it. No problems yet.

I ended up using two as with three I couldn't get the c clip in.
I tied a sock around it as a cushion for when it breaks off and bounces around the bell housing.
