6 Blade fan question.
I just replaced my failing 3 blade fan on the passenger side with a 6 blade fan. When the fan is on it looks like the fan is making contact with the lower radiator hose going to the water pump. Whats the best and easiest way to fix this?
I'd rather not remove the whole assembly again and switch the 6 blade fan to the driver's side. Getting the shroud back in was quite the PITA. Thanks....

This is an excerpt from TSB # 8526, dated Dec. 6, 1985.
"Replacement of 3 blade fan with new 6 blade fan: -Disconnect battery -Remove engine splash shield -Drain coolant -Replace coolant hose to water pump. This hose has a different shape and guarantees a safe distance of at least 10 mm between the new fan blades and coolant hose. If a new hose is not available, the old hose must be shortened by 5 to 10 mm on the waterpump side. -Refill coolant -Remove fan shroud and replace fan/motor -Reinstall fan shroud Note: Check installed position of fan! Plug connection must face down at an angle to the right." The next time you do buy a lower radiator hose, I'm sure you will be getting the "newer" shaped hose. You might be able to just tie the hose back for now.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just checked, the fan isn't hitting the hose, but there is about 2mm of clearance. I try cutting the hose tomorrow.

Ok, I removed the hose and cut about 5mm off of it. It worked great, there is a good 10mm between the fan blades and the hose now. I figured, I was planning on changing the coolant this week anyways.

mine came with 6 blade fans already....i dont even hear them turn on they are sooo quiet...

I changed mine to an aftermarket 'flexlight' assembly. Takes a little work to make it fit but it works very, very well....bout $90.

i paid $75 for the pair /shroud thru this forum, bolted them up without any clearance problems.
seems to be a clearance problem when putting the 6 bl in the 3 bl hole.

does the 6 blade assembly have a different shroud than the 3?
I have the 3 blades installed and a2 6 blade motors. Was going to do teh swap, but after reading this post, it sounds as if the shroud is different??

The shrouds are the same. The lower hose is different. The hose that was on the 86 that I got the six bladed fans off of has a much smaller diameter as it passes the fans. Also has a heavy rubber sheath on it.

I used the stock shroud and ditched the flexlight one.
