I posted this on the "other" board but thought I'd post here also in hope of a response.
I'm tired of leaks from the power rack and the lines and just want to simplify things. (I always thought the 944's P/S was too light anyway) I checked with Ian at 944online and he has a manual rack for $450 plus $139 each for the inner tie rods. Ouch. I'm hoping that somebody here is parting a early 944 and has one that they'll let go cheap. I'll need the rack, inner tie rod ends, boots, and steering shaft. Thank in advance |

im doing a manual rack right now. but im waiting for the tie rods, seem to hard to get. get all your parts first, and you WILL need the longer intermediate shaft to fit.
cost me 445 total, shipped even, for a REBUILT rack from meridian WITHOUT a core. comes with good boots and plain rods for a early 44, no joint on the ends. ask for dara. ians got good prices but i think this was a better deal, althou get the tie rods from him. the later model, 86-88? takes a special tie rod 944 347 033 03 meridian is on the net.

I just removed my manual rack system from my '86. Going back to power now that I no longer have the callaway kit in there. It was originally in an '83. It seems pretty good shape to me. Got all the parts;
rack, intermediate shaft, bushings and mounts, tie rod assemblies. Partwerks sells the used kit for $295, so make me a offer. |

Marksportcts, what's your take on the manual rack? Is it too stiff for everyday driving? I know it will be tough at parking speeds but how hard is it with, say, 225/50 front tires?
My oil cooler seals just puked on me so I'm now in the middle of replacing those so my power steering problem will have to wait for a few weeks. Where are you located and what do you want for the stuff?

When I had it with 225/50/15 is was bit heavy, but lighter than a power rack that has the pump belt off. I drove my car and it had lots of feedback. I am now running 225/40/18 on Kinesis Supercups, so it is now heavier but not unbearable. I'm located in Abbotsford, BC.

and since im still waiting for tie rods, im going to swich back to a larger steering wheel, such as a 15" lecarra leather. and take off my 350 mm momo competion wheel and adapter and w/p crest on the button, all in very very good condition and id most likely part with for a mere pitence of say, $200.
if your interested that is. and hopefully i will soon have my parts and back down the road.

sorry man, i was trying to put in a newer style power steering rack at the time.... nobody knew or replied and i didnt want to take the chance of screwing it up, so i kept my rack in place and sold the 85 to a friend who needed one.
