Ratteling when I take out the clutch

When im ideling, and i let the clutch out, I hear a ratteling sound. Im assuming it would be the clutch making the sound. Wondering what I need to do.

Could be the rubber coming apart, or throw out bearing starting to go bad. Have you put in a new clutch lately?

Put her on stands and get someone to go under the car as you go through the gears.

It could be something simple.............. although it sounds like it could be any part of your drive line.

My guess would of been your throw out bearing but you would hope a new one was replaced by the previous owner.

a ton.
throw out bearing its self is prolly not more than $100. but labor is gonna cost you. some people on the boards have done clutch work themselves so it is possible. but you may want to schedule a weekend (or more) of full work days if you take that route.

i dont mean bear the bearer of bad news.
it could be some thing unrelated to the clutch. maybe just a rattling bolt on one of the exhaust hangers. have it checked out.

if it was unrelated to the clutch, would it still rattle Only when the clutch was out?

A throw out bearing would rattle with the pedal down, being mashed down, or being let up. A good thing to do would be follow advice on previous post, put her on jack stands & check her out.

i assumed that by "let out the clutch" you mean let out the clutch pedal, as is engage the clutch, yes? if that is so everything back to the transmission would be spinning, possibly causing some vibration of parts in the vicinity.
if the car is out of gear with the clutch out, and you rev it does the rattling change at all?

Don't panic yet. These cars are often noisy while idling, clutch desengaged in neutral. Unless this is a new "problem", the noise is likely routine and nothing to worry about unduly.

Do not worry. The symptom you describe has been in both Porsches. It lies in the reverse idler shaft within the transmission. After years they like to rattle. My 82 924 rattled bad at 150k miles, now at over 300k miles (with a friend of mine who is the owner now) it still rattles but works just fine.

ooo, good news sas, thanks. The car is in Neutral, and it DOES not make the sound when i press the pedal down. Only when im not pressing the clutch pedal. If that helps or changes anything let me know.

Nope that is it. When the shafts in the transmission are spinning (clutch out) in neutral. Rattle rattle rattle. Yup, it is fairly normal.

I have sort-of the same problem.

Whenever I let off the clutch after a shift and get on the pedal hard, I hear a "rattle" that sounds like someone shaking a can full of paint chips, it's very faint. It seems to be coming from the back.

I recently had my CV's repacked and thought perhaps the sound had something to do with that. The sound I'm getting is almost like a very quiet version of the noise bad CV's make, but more "tinny" than "solid metaly" - if that makes sense.

I know when you let the car idle with the cluch out, there is a rattle - maybe the rattle after shifting is an extension of this sound (the fifth-gear rattle)??

now, I know this is going to sounds silly, but when we're talking about the R&P, we're definitely talking about a solid clunking sound instead of a clank, right?? I've had this really obnoxious clanking sound emanating from the rear of the car that I just can't isolate. it sounds much more like a loose metal plate or something where I would assume that an R&P would make a more subdued clunk (like it's inside of a solid object - the tranny - that muffles the sound) right?? right fellas??? yes???

ronin - you now have one post for every day of the year!!!!

I would agree that the R&P "should" make a more solid, muffled sound. What you may be hearing could be the CV joints. They give off a really "clanky" noise.

Another thought - would a bad CAT give off the sound I'm hearing? Would it rattle all the time, or just under heavier pedal play after a shift?
