The car has returned.......

Complaints are:

Tension, but do not replace timing belt
AC not working
Instrument cluster not working - if it is a fuse, fix it, otherwise, don't bother.
Window still not working - do not fix unless it is causing the problem with the instrument cluster
Volt meter not working - do not fix unless this is causing said problem with instrument cluster
Top off automatic transmission - fix severe leak as long as it is not expensive.

Expect much hillarity and buffoonery to ensue

It's hard to find socks small enough to fit into the fuse slots. besides, socks don't seem to conduct well.

Top off automatic transmission - fix severe leak as long as it is not expensive. :D :D :D :D :D :rolleyes:

My socks bleed for that car. It is really so sad.




I have been helping an aquaintance get his 'bargain' 944 going.


I went over the other day because I saw it hadn't moved in a few weeks. He was under the hood 'jumping' various electical point with lamp cord.

He had rigged the one fan (other sitting in the dirt) by jumping a dangling relay at the drivers footwell.

The front hoses were being kept in place with shoestrings (I offered zip ties)

Lamp cord was everywhere....holding this and that together..

loose and missing bolts everywhere.....


What can you say to someone like that?

Haha, brilliant :) But still, it's just proof of what the guys at Porsche do when they design and develop cars. The things just keep going, even if you bodge it together with a set of socks. I also found some things that would 100% sure stop a lot of the other cars around to grinding halt, but somehow not the old 951. Even a completly busted rotor that damaged the distribution cap severly was no reason to stop going strong for miles and miles without the driver noticing. Only after doing a simple 'tune-up' i noticed the complete ignition system needed to be replaced (spraks, rotor, distributor and even the wires). Also, it seems that completly rusted starter motors can still crank a 951 to live without a glitch. After getting a new one, the thing still starts as nice as it always did, but somehow the crunchy noise is gone ;)

Fact is: great cars, clever engineering, robust materials = nightmare for amateur mech... (or what some refer to as a GREAT car).

Did you ask him what brand and style of socks would he like installed.. and should you replace the existing socks ( if they are causing a "serious" problem of course )

Mike, how long would you guess it would take to determine where there is a current drain in a 928? This drain is only an issue when the car is NOT running, just sitting draining the battery. Are there many things that could be draining juice, or just a handfull?

First thing to find out is how much current is getting pulled while the car is sitting there - it should be fractions of an amp. Anything more than that, and it can get tedious to check - my comments about 3 - 4 kilometers of wiring in the car was not put in there for humorous effect.

I would start witht he unfused circuits first - alternator, starter, and ignition, and then work your way up from there. Depending on how much is getting pulled from the battery, you can judge which circuits to check first - if it is less than 5 amps, you start with the 5 and 8 amp curcuits.

any 928 electrical problem can be a bigger to track

I'm always partial to having a couple of my buddies from the APLL (Abused Porsche Liberation League) free them of their car and then take 'em into a back alley somewhere for a lesson in respect from some black rubber hoses and socks filled with gravel.

Just readjusted the timing belt today.

Has a few small oil leaks, tranny leaks, ac not working all that well, interior could use some recovering and some parts.
