just when I thought I was getting it all together...

Last couple days I have been noticing a possible problem with my 944 (88 NA) - when I first start the car I hear a loud belt squealing noise from under the hood. I assume that it is the alternator (serpentine belt) because a few times it *hasn't* squealed but when I flip on the headlights or rear defogger it will start. It goes away after about 5-10 seconds and doesn't come back until the next cold start but it's loud and can't be good for the belt. The belt is drum tight and maybe 1.5K miles old. Alternator was recently replaced by PO. Ambient temp. ranges from 65-85 degrees recently. What am I missing here?

thanks,

nate

Sounds like alternator squeal. Try tightening the belt a bit more.

Belt has stretched.

Listen to the Dan man.

I'm worried about bearings, there's almost no give in the belt now, is it really supposed to be super tight? OF course I don't have one of those tension gauges...

The belt has to be as tight as a guitar string - almost no deflection or slack in the belt - tighten it up a turn or two more.

Please..

When you tighten, loosen up the bolts that hold the tightening mechanism. I have seen the cast ears buste off more accessories due to the torque of changing the relationship of the parts (it bends the adjuster, putting torque on the ears)
