Question Looking to purchase a 944

Hello,

I have recently become very interested in the porsche 944. I am a student who drives about 80 miles a day to work. I'm looking for something more fun to drive during my 80 mile a day commute to work that is more efficient than my current Ford Exploder . The only concern that I have about this vehicle is the reliability.

I was hoping that someone might be able to offer some insight as to if this car is for me. I don't care to have the greatest cosmetic condition, that can come later, but reliablity is an important factor to me.

Basically, I don't want a money pit or a car that will stay in the shop even half as long as it is on the road. Any tips as far as what I should look for when purchasing. What to stay away from, and any specific year/condition that has problems? Any related information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
Brandon Burke

Brandon, depending on where you live, I am sure a number of people on this board would be willing to sell you their 944 or may even be able to help you find one...

Ford Exploder -----> Porsche 944 ... Have both, drive only one, the 944.

As far as the reliablility on the road.. well, I have not done things right due to money constraints and I did buy a beater. I fully believe that a 944 with current maint and proper routine care will not let you down..

My ticking time bomb drives 350-400 miles a day and I love it. I have the pedal hitting the floor whenever possible..

One feature of these cars are the handling capability. They are the closest to any 50/50 car available ( correct me if I'm wrong ). I have found this to be a relief as situations have presented themself and have been able to evade soccer moms not looking before they change lanes and hit SOMEONE ELSE but me.

Buy one, you'l love it !!!!

I wasn't kidding...pick one.

'84 Red just had motor mounts replaced, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, oil+filter, fuel filter, the belts and water pump done, as well as the whole front resealed, rollers and tensioners replaced, etc.

'87 Purple (?) will have the belts and water pump done this weekend. also the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, oil+filter were just replaced.

Either one for less than 5K...

Exterior is in excellent shape. Tires are almost new. The interior is good. You can see in the pic below. There are a couple of cracks in the dash, but nothing a $70 cap can't cure, I am probably going to put one in next week.
As with all 944s the sunroof can either be raised or removed, depending on your preference.

As you can see from the "Timing belt party" post, a bunch of us 944 owners are getting together this Saturday to do our timing belts, water pumps, etc. so mechanically the car will be a 100%.
Let me know if you have any other questions, concerns. In fact, shoot me an e-mail at ikarchov AT HOTMAIL DOT com, so we can take this off the board...
