While I'm In There...
 
Okay, so I just replaced my left rear CV's and rebuilt my left rear axle on the 1987 944 and I am eager to do more stuff. So I bought some new rear rotors and pads and I plan to get a new set of wheel bearings as well. I also scored a 951 sway bar and plan to upgrade both front and rear sway bars to turbo specs.

So does anyone have any advice for maintenance or upgrades "While I'm In There"? Assuming money is no object, what have other people done that they are happy with? I'm thinking I could upgrade the suspension bushings - except I definitely don't want anything that will squeak (I had squeaky bushings in my 911SC and it drove me nuts). I am planning to buy stock replacement wheel bearings. But if anyone knows of a better quality bearing, I'm game to try it. I am considering widening the track with wheel spacers - but that might be overkill and I'm not sure how it would effect handling (good or bad).

So anyway, I enjoy wrenching and I have sort of run out of projects for the 944 :eek:. Any advice on how to spend some money and have fun with wrenches while I have the rear wheels off?

You're joking, right? run out of projects for the 944? Is that even possible?

Well, actually I've had the car for seven years and she has about 130k miles. It is the best street car I've ever owned and so I plan to keep it for life. So last year, I started on a quest to get the car as mechanically perfect as possible so she could go another 100,000+ miles. And after blowing a couple of thousand $$$ at the dealer and lots of DIY hours, the car really seems to be in awesome condition. Just a few little things left. I don't do many upgrades in this car (the sway bars are an exception) so I am mostly just trying to nail down every possible maintenance item I can think of. I'm definitely game to do upgrades - especially if they improve handling or involve higher quality parts. But all in all, I think Stuttgart got the 944 just about right the first time. I often fantasize about doing huge and insane performance enhancement projects. But then I get behind the wheel and think: Why bother? I love this car.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. But if I do the torsion bars, don't I also have to upgrade the springs in front? Not against the idea. Just never thought of it. I saw some "progressive rate" springs in a catalog. Are they any good? Better than regular springs. Hmmm...this is a new area of research for me. Thanks for the idea.
