thermoswitch early and late cars?

A buddy of mine came by and had an over heating issue on his 84' 944.

It looks like the thermoswitch was shot and he replaced it with a late one (3 prong).

The late uses a 3 prong switch........where the early models only used a 2 prong.

Can you use a 3 prong switch with the early car 2 wire setup??

We tried a few different combinations but it would not fire up the fan........

*the fans otherwise work fine...
- short the 2 wires, ignition off, drivers fan runs low speed
- short the 2 wires, ignition ON, both fans run High speed
