Question Would a 944 make a good track car?

Hello everyone! I'm new to this board (but not new to porsche cars) and I am soliciting opinions about the suitability of a 1986 944 as a track car for drivers ed. events and club racing. The vehicle in question is probably too far gone to restore feasibly but seems to be reasonably sound mechanically. The things that are not up to the task of high performance driving I would probably be replacing anyway. When I say that I'm going to make a track car out of it I mean just that; no longer street legal. All interior and comfort items will go. The car has the stock engine and 5 speed manual transmision. I don't know if it would have a LSD or not. Do these cars have any weaknesses that would make this a bad idea? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely. A 951 built and tuned properly will whip a Z06 Corvette's ass in Auto-X, assuming you're a decent driver.

Not bad for a 20-year-old car, eh?

You can always run one in 944-Spec class or 944 Cup on the East Coast. Check out these:

no, 944s handle horrible. They're worthless. Nothing on the car is good for a track. *****ty brakes, *****ty suspension, EVERYTHING sucks. Don't turn a Porsche into a full track car, you're just wasting your time

I stock 944na porsche makes a pretty decent ITS car, That is through SCCA club racing, which we all know is pretty unfair towards 944's and porsches in general...

I don't know what autocrosses you go to, but there is NO WAY a 951 with turbo lag should take a Z06 corvette at an autocross. For that matter, just about every corvette down to the ZR1 should take the 951. Our local PCA chapter does a lot of events in conjunction with the local corvette club.

Most of the time, a 944 with a decent driver will take event moderately modified 951's at an autocross, from my personal experience.

The track (I assume we are talking about Drivers Ed events) may be a different story, because there a 951 can stretch it's legs.....

Yes, Tifo is correct, those Z06 corrvetes are some of the fastest cars in our autox region, only correvets I can beat in autox are from the 60's. But I can definately beat many 951's with my na, simpily because of the turbo's lag.

I would think that a heavly modified 951 could give the corvette a good run, 951 with mods 320rwp change to a quick spool turbo and throw in some suspension goodies and I think it could do it

That's exactly what I was talking about (a 951 with some mods). . . I remember reading about 3-4 months ago about someone who observed exactly this happen. Forget whether it was this board or Rennlist, I'll see if I can find it.

I have an '83, with over 180,000 miles on it. Bone Stock. All the front seals, balance shaft seals, and oil pan gasket have been replaced, and a new clutch, but that's about it...no oil leaks or smoke.

I assumed I was down on power, until last month at Road Atlanta. At the start of the long back straight, I tucked in behind a faster 944, and pulled out halfway down the straignt just to see what would happen...both of us flat out in 5th, and I pulled ahead...not so down on power.

They are a great track car. Semi bullet proof engine and drive train.

944Cup...come on down!

Only if the corvette is bone stock. I love the people that trick out a 4-banger with "insert mod here (turbo, supercharger, NOS)" and then brag about how they are faster than a "insert America V8 here". It is terribly funny because if that V8 had any work done there is no chance. A built 951 has maybe 350hp....it is no problem to get 600hp out of a supercharged v8. Also the corvette has (very hesitate to say) but better handling in the Z06 than the 951. Also the Z06 is 405hp from the factory. No mods yet. That is impressive. I have an article where a magazine compares the 951 to a corvette in the late 80's. The corvette handled better and had more power. The only place the 951 beat the vette was in top speed. The higher redline with the turbo boost increase made the difference.

Sorry but I personally like Corvettes a LOT and have since before I started liking Porsches.

Um I have seen heavily modified 951 with 600hp, I think after a while the weight difference of the 2 cars would come into play, and I think the 951 is lighter. Anyway I just dont like Vettes or most American cars, sorry

Then explain to me why a supra with big twins spanks EVERYTHING from a 60 mph roll (granted the supra is a V6). BUT there are plenty of 4-bangers very capable of beating down a Z06. And don't argue this with me, you will do nothing but make yourself look like a moron.

I have a number of friends with a talon or evo or 240sx (with an SR20DET swap) that beat down Z06s on the stock turbo. Remember, you're forced induction has a lot of power to be maid from minor little changes, and much more power to be made from every mod than a n/a engine.
