Hi guys, it's been a long time!!
Starting the engine from cold, my car sounds as if it's air cooled! Clattering away. I checked the oil level (OK) oil changed 1k miles ago. I put in some hydraulic lifter fluid and the noise went away - until next time i started the car! It has been intermittently clattering when cold without any discernable difference in oil pressure. Today is quite warm and I started the car (it clattered alot) and drove to a garage (by which time it had warmed up and stopped clattering) the mechanic couldn't help. On the way home the oil pressure sat at about 2bar (normally sits at 3) and at one point dipped to 0.5 for a second when i pulled in, the red light flashed but pressure reterned to 2bar almost instantly. Questions are: Is the oil pressure behaviour abnormal or just because it's a hot day? Is the clattering related to the oil pressure ( I suspect it is the hydraulic lifters)? How can I eliminate the clattering? Any thoughts much appreciated as always... Thanks F

Check your oil pressure relief valve. That is take it out, apart and inspect and/or replace the o-rings. Look for any particulates stuck in the OPRV that could cause it to stick.

I'll check it out - thanks Hugh!!
Would this be responsible for the clatter too?
