Messy antifreeze procedure - better way?
 

Last night, I needed to refill my antifreeze/coolant as I had changed out a hose. This brought me to the coolant system bleed procedure in the Haynes manual. As I obediently used the bleeder screw to let out the cooling system pressure until 'no more bubbles appear in the fluid' (I think that's what the Haynes manual says) I was horrified by the amount of coolant emitted (all over the top of my engine) and I'm thinking SOMEONE out there must have a better way.

Maybe a 'no-mess' bleeder screw?

hmm, i have thought about this too, although i generally put some rags around the area to catch the fluid. have you seen the oil drain plugs, that have a valve on them, that you open to change the oil, and you dont have to remove the bolt? well, you could do something like that, and then you would only have to attach a hose, and lead it away from the top of your engine. anyone in engineering could modify one of these drain bolts to suit the thread{i think its prob 10, or 12 mm}and it would bolt straight in. just a thought!

you're not supposed to unscrew that bleeder screw that much. you can unscrew it maybe 1/8 of a turn for proper bleeding without having the coolant spurt out too much.

You can always partially fill the system through the bleed hole.
Leave the presure cap off and use a small funnel to fill through the blled hole (fill the system to near correct level through the expansiont tank first). Make sure the heater valve is open when doing this. When the level has settled, run the engine with the bleed bolt screwed nearly all the way in, tighten and make sure the fans cycle at least twice.
(This also works for the 924 too)
