944 Wave

Yes, I am still a newbie, but I have a have a question for you more experienced 944 owners.

When I drive the Jeep Wrangler, the proper wave to another Wrangler owner is to lift 2-4 fingers off the steering wheel with your left hand. When I had my 1962 Chrysler, the proper wave to other antique Chrysler owners was a thumbs-up. With my VW's, there were a variety of waves from a point out the window to a left-handed Hitler-style salute. (The windows are always down when driving a classic VW)

So yesterday, I finally started driving my 944 after picking it up from the shop. I spotted 3 Porsches since then 1-911 and 2-Boxters. The 911 and one Boxter flashed their lights at me. The other Boxter had a fairly cute woman shyly waving at me. Do Porsche 944 owners usually flash their lights? This seems like a lot of useless wear and tear on the flip-up lights. My fog lights are hosed, so I can't flash them. What do y'all do?

If they're coming your way in the opposite lane, I just wave or stick my fist in the air out the window. The hidaway headlights just take too long to go up, IMHO.

Either way, its rare for Boxster owners to even aknowledge you on the road - congrats.

That may be a North/South thing. First of all, there aren't too many Porsche owners down here (plenty of dually truck owners with rebel flags on the back) and secondly, we're just a bunch of friendly folks down here.

yeah up here in the north, the normal Porschephile has an older porsche that they maintain themselves, whereas the owners of newer Porsches rarely even know their car's displacement.

yup, a lot of times, my wave goes unnoticed, so i have changed tactics! i have a rather loud dual tone horn, which after a long blast, when the stunned owner looks over, i give him the "you're the man, pointing finger". Just for laughs, and to ease the tension, at traffic lights, i have a set of "bubba teeth" which i flash at other people who stare at my car! note, this is not a good thing, when its a pretty girl beside you at the lights!! its all good!

The 911 and Boxster guys don't often return the wave, so hey, you must live in a friendly part of the country.

I use the fog lights for a quick "blink hello" and then I get a wave back.

You live just up I-40 in Nash Vegas. Are the people there not so friendly. I'll be sure to wave to you next weekend. My kid lives up there and my wife and I try to visit about once a month.

I'm just right down the road from Memphis, but I can't get a 911 wave. Although I have to say that Memphis folk aren't quite as snobby as Jackson. Probably why I don't like this town that much. Next time I'm in Memphis, I'll see if I can get a wave.

A Boxter driver waved??? I doubt it! He was probably just holding his hand up to block the sun from his eyes.

If you are watching I-40 from Bumpus HD in Jackson on Friday around 6:30pm, I'll be sure that a 944 owner waves to you (me on the way to Nashville).
