how's your fuel mileage?

I just finished my first good tank of gas since having all the work done on my 944 (first one without being stuck in traffic, that is) I'm getting a shade under 25 MPG in my '88 NA, this is all off-highway driving but fairly quick (50-60 MPH) and few stops. Is this good? I swear I was getting better mileage when I first got the car. I'm running Chevron supreme and the only mod to my car that I am aware of is an Autothority chip and shifter. I ditched the K&N 'cause I don't like 'em.

Is it possible a nasty old fuel filter could actually help mileage?

I'm not really obsessing about it but I do think MPG is a good sign of state of tune. For instance, my Stude is getting about 10 MPG which I think means the carburetor is f**ked up (that's the technical term for it.)

I drive all highway and get about 27mpg. It all depends on the spiritidness of the driving.

How does the mileage gauge work anyway? Is it throttle position or is there some other way it knows what mileage you're getting? And how do you read that to mpg anyway? I try to hover around '30' but heck, what does the 30 really mean?

Do they still have the MPG gauge in the 85.5+ cars?

Hmm, I always thought that was the boost guage on turbos.

My(prospective) 944 doesn't have anything there.

I get between 23 and 30 MPG in my '87 NA on mid-grade pump gas and an AutoThority chip with stock intake and exhaust. I haven't checked my 951's mileage recently (I'm in the process of doing a head gasket), but I did get some where around 30 MGP during a 300+ mile drive from Beaufort, SC to Charlotte NC when I brought the car home last March. The 951 has a Guru chip, 3.0 BAR FPR, ReliaBoost MBC, and stock exhaust/intake.

Oops! I forgot to mention that the MPG gage uses a signal that is proportional to injector duty cycle. The longer the injectors are open, the lower the indicated MPG.

My '88 doesn't have the MPG gauge, there's nothing at the bottom of the tach. I was just measuring mileage and how much it took to fill the tank.

I just filled up today and got a whopping 20.4 mpg. Very few of the miles were on the highway. I do run the a/c all the time and I only know how to mash the pedal all the way to the floor to accelerate. I do use Exxon premium gas. Friday will be my first interstate trip. I wonder how much milage I will get then.

16, yes 16 all the way up to 22... I rarely drive on the highway, always make good use of my FR Wilk chip, and the tacho is starting to wear out between the 3.5k-5.5k mark.

My AC is only run when the engine temp is too hot, I do suspect i have a small fuel leak, i need a new cat, and i always buy the most expensive gas, as when i lived in England i was paying upto $8 a gallon so whats $2.20 when compared to that.

I just did a big highway trip, and I got 41mpg (us gallons, 51mpg imperial gallons). I was absolutely stunned, that's the best mileage my car has ever gotten.
My engine is nearly toast (90-110psi on all 4 cylinders), however, everything outside of it is in tip-top shape.
If you want to crunch the numbers yourself, I went 1040km's on 60 litres.

I usually get 700km's before the light comes on, and it usually takes 70 litres. I don't know what that is in mpg, but it's 10L/100km's (for us Canadian guys).

That highway trip, I took it pretty easy, drove 120kph the whole way, not a lot of spirited driving, about 100 city km's on that tank as well, and a lot of hills.

I just got back from my first highway trip. I went from a normal 20.5 mpg all the way up to 24.9 mpg. My 944 is stock. Any ideas (besides my lead foot an my need for a/c) why my gas milage sucks?

Over the years I average around 25-28 mpg. Above that after a tune up , oil change and filters.
I also am relatively lightfooted.
