first long trip...

anyone got a checklist of what to look for in an 88 NA before a long trip? all fluids are new except for brake/clutch, new rad, been driving fine, just nervous 'cause I've never taken it more than 50 miles at a stretch and my boss is sending me to NJ near NYC in a week and a half. (4 hour drive)

thanks

nate

a 4 hour drive is a long trip? phhhhtt...I drove mine from St. Louis to Amarillo. It was a 900 mile trip. Thats a "long trip". :P

Fluids and tires. Make sure to take a gallon of antifreeze, full socket set, and a phone.

I'm heading out on my 1st trip this weekend, about 500 miles round trip. I made sure that my AAA dues were up to date and my cell phone charger works in the car!

Oh well, it's irrelevant now, just found out a coworker with a new GTI 1.8T is going to be going as well.

I'll be nice and pack the V-1

I made it. My first road trip in my new '44. Made about a 500 mile trip to Nash Vegas and back. No issues. I only got around 25 MPG on the interstate though. I thought I might get a little better than that. The temp gauge, which I was a little concerned about, never got above 1/4 the whole trip.

Only ran into a few THP troopers on the trip. I was nervous because of my screwed up speedometer. I kept it between 3000-3200 RPM which I think should be about 80-85 MPH. When the radar detector went off, I just let off the gas to get around 2800 RPM. The speed limit is only 70 in TN.

It was a lot of fun taking this car on a trip. My wife agreed. We are now planning longer trips to other destinations soon.

I drive two 4 hour trips every month from NYC to MD and back. My car gets 35 mpg averaging 75mph at 3200 rpm. Is the gearing that diff. between a series 1 and a series 2 car? I'm up to 3500 rpm to hang in the 80 mph zone. And you would think that you would be the one getting better gas mileage with the taller gearing.
You lucky. Speed limit is at best 65 often at 55 in my route.
I need a radar detector.

What was the weather like for your drive? I just came back from a 3 hour drive through 85 degree weather and my temperature gauge is right above the 1/4 mark but when I got stuck in traffic and the gauge went up to about the 3/4 mark, just curious. Also do you guys use Redline Water Wetter?

no wetter here, just antifreeze.
i never seen my guage go above 1/4. might check your fan turn on /off points, belts, hoses, airpath, etc. fan should switch on as the temp increases. if car has overheated in the past, thermostat capability may be diminished.

80-85 and sunny. I was getting up to the 3/4 mark on mine, but I was running a low-temp thermostat with a regular temp cooling fan switch. Apparently those two items conflict with one another. I put the low-temp switch in the car and it almost never even gets to 1/2 even on a hot day in bad traffic.

I've never run anything but an antifreeze/water combo in any of my cars.

i saw an amazing sight last night.

I passed a young (teenage) girl driving a BMW on her cell phone... but she was (responsibly!) pulled to the side of the road while she was talking. Then, when she was finished, she hung up the phone and pulled back onto the road! AMAZING!

I chock this up to a lack of driving ability instead of common courtesy, though.

i just got back from a +1300 mile trip over two days through canada's twisty mountain roads, most of it at 80-120mph. no problems at all with the car. 500miles should be cake for a well maintained '88.

oh, here are some photos;
