84 transmission

The transmission in my 1984 944 NA just died. Any idea what year transmissions would fit without any modifications?

Anything up to early 85 will fit. 924S will fit, but 5th gear is lower.
After 85/2 should fit, I can't remember whether the casting bosses for the trans mounts are on the later trans. 944S/S2 and Turbo have the wrong ratios.

You need an 016k Transmission(assuming its a stick), if you follow the link and scroll down you can see which other models use the same transmission.

This doesnt work both ways... i.e. older models (<85.5) can have a newer transmission, but i think in >85.5 944's the speedo connector is to the transmission(or something like that), so you cant fit an older tranny to a newer car.

I read somewhere the 944 uses an Audi Gearbox. Is that the case and were these built for Porsche or were they used in certain Audis as well? It would no doubt be cheaper if buying VW parts than Porsche or am I mistaken?
