944 staring problem Bad DME?

My 1983 944 is in the shop with starting problems. The tech is a reputable Porsche Mechanic, and he cannot figure out what is wrong! i owe him $200 already for diagnostic and he has no idea what the problem is. The DME is bad, when he swaps in a new one, the car still cranks with out starting. The coil has also been swapped. I dunno where to turn from here. Is the DME relay related? I dunno what to tell him. He is the only Porsche mechanic in my area. I may need to just fix it myself.
