Value of 944S2, M030 Car

I'm looking at a 944S2 with 72k, recent belts and clutch. New head. Very nice shape. M030 package. Price is $13,500. Is this too high?

Yes. Granted, very clean cars with lower milage are extremely hard to find these days, that asking price is a bit high. Is it up for sale by a local used car dealer? What kind of history does it have? As with any car, a PPI is key (no matter what they said about its recent work).

You know, kbb says my S2 is worth $3,400! Once a car is past a certain age, and especially with a specialty car like this, none of these guides are much help. You just have to know the market. Look at what similar cars are going for, etc.

I have an '89 944 S2 Coupe with 125K miles on it, and I bought it last year for $7,200. BUT, it has some issues and a few things it needs to be perfect.

To be honest, for that perfect 72K mile example that's been lovingly maintainted and has M030 suspension goodies... I think it might be worth $13K! Offer $11.5 or 12K, but don't insult the guy! Nice cars are worth more... and it pays to buy the nicest car you can afford. You'll save a lot more over time. Also, S2's were mostly daily drivers, and unfortunately finding a real clean one is pretty hard. Most were driven into the ground. This unfortunately makes it hard to find true comparables. There are lots of cheap S2's out there, and IMHO, there is a reason why they are cheap.

Also, look at what a nice clean low milage 968 will set you back... that will make you feel better about spending $13K on an S2.

I agree Seattle S2 - I reently had a battle with my insurance company (who still stiffed me in the end) about this. If you get a good example with all the extras, in a desireable colour with less than 100k miles, full service history from a reputable porsche specialist and a big folder of receipts to back it up then expect to pay almost as much as you would for a 968 (only a facelift version if you ask me!).

If you buy a cheaper car, expect to spend money on getting it up to spec, and remember it will never be as valuable without a long history record - the car might be as good as a more expensive one but if you can't prove it's been looked after all its life it don't mean a thing!

Here in the UK S2s go between £5000 and £15000 - age doesn't come into it since they only made them for a couple of years, this is down to condition, history and desireability.
968's start at around £12k and go up to £17k+ for a stunner. You can get a Boxter for less than £20k!!

$13,500 is too high for a 944S2, even with M030 and lower miles. You can find some examples of the 968 coupe for a grand or two more, if you look hard enough!

According to Excellence magazine, a 944S2 coupe is worth somewhere between $8k to $13k. Bear in mind, a $13k 944S2 had better be a low mileage, prestine condition example.

As a point of reference, in 2001, I bought my 1989 944S2 with 115k miles and in decent shape for $8k.

Fair do's Zoltan, if it were a Cabriolet it would be worth it - I know values are different over on your side of the water so I won't contest it.

If I wanted top money for my S2 though I'd advertise it at 1k more because people always haggle. So it's not that far out if its a corker is it...?

I would agree with the notion that it all comes down to condition and care. I would not hesitate to spend a few k more to get a great car to start, as you will be putting lots of time, $, and effort into it over the years. To do so on a mediocre car would be very frustrating. Saving $2k by buying a lesser car is probably not a real savings, or, at the least, is a bit of a rounding error when it comes to total cost of ownership over the course of several years. It's one thing to score a great deal on a used 993 and save $10k+ over retail, but 944s are such a value as it is, I'd be much more worried about finding exactly the right one.

$13,500 is a little high BUT;

1. That is ASKING price not necessarily what they will take for it.
2. Location, location, location, as had been already said where you live has a big affect on price... Porsches are somewhat more rare in Guam than in Florida
3. Condition. condition, condition, see above.

If it is a really sweet car and I had the cash available I would consider buying (make an offer on) that car.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

No location stated and I think we would all agree that that makes a big difference. Up here in Canada that would be a pretty good deal. I have seen 85+ N/A selling for close to that. A local dealer has an 89 S2 that they are trying to sell for $29k. That I believe is way to high but a really clean S2 with that suspension would definetly be a $15k + car.

Condition, colour, and location can REALLY change the value.
